Happy Canada Day

As we celebrate Canada Day this coming long weekend the roads around Northumberland County will be quite busy and many of us go away. It has been decided NOT to schedule any NHCC club rides during our long weekends this summer. Therefore, there will be no scheduled ride on Friday, June 28th, Sunday, June 30th or Monday, July 1st.

Have a wonderful and safe long weekend everyone!

Open Call for Ride Leaders

The strength of the NHCC ride program relies on the commitment of volunteers and we’d really like some more help. We are looking to expand our pool of ride leaders in order to continue offering the quantity and choice of rides the NHCC currently enjoys. Even if you can just be available occasionally, it sure helps to share the load.

You don’t need to be a super-fit cyclist, just willing to pitch in a little. In order to be a ride leader, we ask that:

  • You ride at the front of the group to set the pace (except for Level 4 which has no maximum pace)
  • You are able to navigate using Ride With GPS or a printed map
  • You are familiar with safety protocols, or have the willingness to learn!

With our Ride with GPS club membership and turn by turn instructions it can be super easy to navigate. We’ll show you how if you haven’t figured it out. If you are a fairly regular participant in any of the Club rides please consider helping out.

FYI, these are the weekly scheduled rides to consider volunteering for:
Monday evenings: Level 1, Level 3
Tuesday evenings: Level 2, Level 4
Wednesday evenings: Level 1, Level 3
Thursday evenings: Level 2, Level 4
Sunday or Saturday mornings: any level
Friday mornings: Mixed Levels

Just send off a quick email to Debbie and let her know you can help president@northumberlandhills cyclingclub.com and we’ll connect you up with the ride coordinator who will get you ready to go!

A great big thank you!

ALL LEVELS RIDE & SOCIAL: Wednesday, June 19th

It’s the third Wednesday of the month already and it’s time for our once-monthly All Levels Ride and Social! All Levels Rides are a monthly opportunity for all NHCC members to ride together, with the option to try out one of the other levels on an out-and-back route where nobody gets lost.

There will be 4 designated pace-setters among the group, riding at each of the NHCC defined Levels (1-4). Just pick the level you want to try, and follow that pace setter to see what riding at that level really feels like. If you change your mind mid-ride, no problem, just slow down and wait for a group that’s riding at the speed you like. The All Levels Ride is ideal if you think you’d like to feel what the other levels are like without committing.

We ride for 45 minutes (or less depending on your Level) then turn around and head back the same way you went.  Dennis will lead the Level one riders.  Everyone should finish around the same time for the optional social part where we head indoors for drinks, wings, social time and meeting others.

Time: 6:30–8:00pm (ride) 8:00-9:30pm (social)
Route Map: All Levels Ride Out and Back route map link on Ride With GPS
Start location:
The Mill Restaurant, Cobourg.

Sunday, June 23rd We’re Going to the Dogs!

That’s right – Dogs! This Sunday, June 23rd our Club Ride will be a fundraiser for the Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guides.  The ride will start from Richard and Leigh Thompson’s home in Hastings – map below.  There will be puppies, cycling, swimming, and a BBQ!
There are four ride distances/levels and four start times. Lots of choices! Lots of food and lots of puppies!  Please bring a donation or complete a voluntary pledge form available on our calendar. Please bring a lawn chair, beverage of choice and some extra pocket change for a “puppy kissing booth”. For those wishing only to socialize, donate and kiss puppies, the BBQ will start at approx. 1:00 pm.

Sunday, June 16th – Annual Memorial Ride

Please join us on Sunday, June 16th as we will ride to honour the memory of NHCC club members who have passed. At the start of the ride we collect voluntary donations for the Heart and Stroke Foundation in honour of Mike Sonosky. We will also remember former NHCCers Sharon Ingle and David Pollack.

The route: It’s a simple out-and-back along the Waterfront Trail Eastbound so there are no route maps or ride leaders needed. We will break into groups according to ability and everyone can ride as long (or short) as desired. Make it an easy 25k, or go all the way to the lighthouse in Presqu’ile Park for a 100k return trip.  Please leave a comment letting others know approximately what level of difficulty and distance you wish to ride.
Start time: 10:00am
Start location: Donegan Park

ADVANCE NOTICE:  Mark your calendars for Sunday, June 23rd when Richard and Leigh Thompson are hosting a fundraising ride for the Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guides.  There will be puppies, cycling, swimming, and a BBQ.  What more could you want? The ride will start and end at Leigh and Richard’s Home in Hastings and the route will be along the trail to Peterborough.  Please see our Facebook post for additional information or our calendar for a voluntary pledge sheet. More information to follow.

Commuter Cycling Master Plan

Hamilton Township is working on a Commuter Cycling Master Plan and they have asked for our club’s assistance in completing a survey. Please take a few minutes and click the link provided below. This is completely voluntary. Thank you.

Sunday Ride: May 26th

The weather on Sunday looks promising and let’s do the Waterfront Trail! There are two starting locations and times depending on how far you want to ride. If you would like to ride a little longer meet up in Cobourg at Westwood Park on Carlisle (between Ewing & Westwood) and follow the Waterfront Trail into Port Hope.  For those wishing to skip the hills out of downtown Port Hope and make it a shorter ride meet at King’s Field in Port Hope.  We will head west along Lakeshore and turn around whenever!  This ride will be suitable for most levels.  Please comment here so that you can buddy up with another rider of your ability. No maps needed for this one as we will be following the Waterfront Trail.  Please bring some cash in case we stop somewhere.  Wesleyville Church location is hosting a Country Market and Nature Fest from 10am to 4pm and I’m quite sure there will be butter tarts!!
Start Time: 10:00 a.m. Westwood Park, Cobourg; 10:30 a.m. King’s Field, Victoria St., Port Hope

IMPORTANT: Please leave a comment so that we can anticipate numbers and also assign ride leaders for the various distances if needed.
