Tuesday, February 23rd: winter walk

For those of us who missed the walk up and around where the other half lives, we missed a good winter style hike that turned out to be enjoyable coupled with comfortable temperatures. Our loss! Don’t let this happen again if you can help it! Come out for Paul’s walk this week which will meet outside the Buttermilk Cafe and head northeast from there. Clothing and footwear to be determined by the weather – who knows what we’ll have by Tuesday! After the walk the group will retire for coffee and a social.

Date: Tuesday, February 23rd
Time: 9:30 sharp
Meeting Place: outside the Buttermilk Cafe
Walk Leader: Paul Mills

Wednesday Feb. 17: Evening Walk at 6:00

It’s nice outside right now but don’t let that warmth fool you. It’s going down to -20 tonight! So, if you are planning to come out for the evening hike be sure to dress in some layers and bundle up. We usually stick to roads and hills that allow us to escape if needed. Perhaps if people want to enjoy a hot chocolate to warm up afterward we’ll plan on that.

Start time: 6:00pm
Start location: Port Hope Town Hall parking lot
Walk leader: Jim Berg

Let us know if you think you’ll join us. Leave a comment. (please)

Tuesday, February 16th: morning walk

Another week, another part of town to explore! Roy will lead the group north of the 401 and around where some of the other half lives. After the fresh air and exercise, there will be some coffee drinking and more chatting at Harden and Huyse. Let everyone know that you’re coming by leaving a comment below. They really want to know whether they can expect the pleasure of your company, and the more the merrier! Feel free to bring a friend or two, just bring along a guest waiver.

Time: 9:30
Meeting Place: The Mill parking lot, northeast corner of Elgin and Ontario Streets
Walk Leader: Roy Martin
Distance: 7 km

Wednesday Night Hike: Feb. 10, 6:00pm in Port Hope

For all you folks who chickened out staying indoors last week for fear of rain, it simply didn’t materialize. We had a great time, exploring the nooks and crannies of Port Hope. Did you know there’s a fence hidden away that’s completely covered in vinyl LPs? We amused ourselves by looking over what must have been someone’s decidedly no-longer-worthy music tastes. So, we’ll do it again this week—go about 6-9km for our evening hike/walk. You’ll burn calories heading up all those hills! Feel free to bring a friend. There are no fees involved in our hiking/walking program, we only ask that you bring a signed waiver.

Start time: 6:00pm
Start location: Port Hope Town Hall Parking lot
Hike Leader: Pamela Tate

Put on some warm comfy shoes, eat dinner a little earlier and come on out. We always have great conversation and we love welcoming new people.

Tuesday, February 10th: morning walk

Sunday, February 7th: hike

Maria is leading a hike for the Pine Ridge Hiking Club this Sunday in the Warkworth area and if anyone from NHCC would like to join us, guests are always welcome. It will be a 12km hike on rural gravel roads, a section of unmaintained road, and a couple of side trails to check out an old boy scout camp by Salt Creek and then over to enjoy the view from Mitchell Mountain. Bring a lunch and a drink. You can meet up to car pool with the PRHC and will probably recognize some familiar faces! They do leave right on time so it’s best to get there 10 minutes before departure time. It won’t be a super fast paced hike.

Date: Sunday, February 7th
Meeting Place(s): Home Hardware Parking Lot, Toronto Road, Port Hope before 9:15, or Hwy 401/45 commuter parking lot, Cobourg, before 9:30
Distance: 12km

Wednesday Feb. 3, Evening Walk/Hike at 6:00pm

The weather isn’t too promising at the moment, but hey…let’s see how it goes. We’ll meet in the parking lot tomorrow night at 6:00pm and venture out going up, over, and around the streets of Port Hope. The conversation is always entertaining, and the people are a great bunch to get to know.

By the way, all are welcome. It’s not necessary to be a member of the NHCC in order to participate in the off-season activities. We do however, ask that non-members bring a signed waiver to give the the activity leader for insurance purposes.

Cross Country Skiing: Saturday Jan. 30, 1:00pm

Lots of new puffy white stuff in the forest, so we’ll make the most of it. You know, happy people were skiing this past week even after all that rain when Cobourg was looking a little sparse. Being further north there’s always plenty of snow in the forest and Saturday looks like the best day this weekend for weather.

So, dig out the skiis and come on out. We will probably cover between 5 and 8 km over an hour and a half. Don’t worry if you think you can’t keep up. There are no experts here, especially when Anita is leading the way. 😃

Start time: 1:00pm
Start location: Northumberland Forest, Beagle Club parking lot
Your Fearless Ski Leader: Anita Macklin
Level of Difficulty: Ummmm….easy!

Please let us know you are coming by leaving a comment. It helps us to do a little advance planning.
