The NHCC Cycling Safety (CanBike2) course starts Tuesday

The NHCC Cycling Safety/CanBike2 course is a two-evening, one full day comprehensive Cycling Skills and Safety course being offered through a combined partnership between the NHCC and Cycle Transitions and available both members and non-members. Participants will learn to ride defensively, and develop skills and attitudes suitable for cycling either individually or a group, including:

  • good traffic judgement and anticipation
  • assertiveness in traffic
  • knowledge of the rules of the road
  • understanding potential hazards
  • communication techniques
  • collision avoidance techniques
  • group riding dynamics and etiquette

Instructors: Rick Nonnekes and Anita Macklin are certified Can-Bike instructors and are confident that regardless of experience, everyone will learn something new and be challenged by advanced bike handling skills.

Tuesday April 11th, 7-9pm (Part 1)
Tuesday April 18,7-9pm (Part 2)
Saturday April 29, 9am-4pm (Parts 3-5)

Members of NHCC: $10* (payable to Cycle Transitions)
Members of Cycle Transitions: FREE
Non-members: $25*
*participants wishing an official CanBike2 certification upon completion of the course will incur an additional cost of $10 to cover administration fees.

Important: Please bring your bicycle and helmet. Cycle Transitions has indoor facilities for bike handling skills training that will be covered at each session.

Women’s Workshop: Thursday, April 20th

Cycle Transitions will be hosting another Women’s Workshop. This is a hands on opportunity to learn how to clean your bike, clean and lubricate your chain, and change a tire. Wear some old clothes and bring your bike. You do not have to be a member of NHCC to participate, but pre registration is mandatory.
There will be another workshop covering the same material Thursday, May 11th that is open to all genders. Another post for this will be coming soon.

The cost of each workshop is $10. However, if you are a member of Cycle Transitions, there is no charge. If you wish to join Cycle Transitions, please visit their website. One year memberships are $30 per person or $50 for a family, plus online registration fees.

Dennis is leading everyone to the west end along the board walk before the coffee and social time at Craft Food House. Our cycling season officially begins in a few weeks so there won’t be many more opportunities to enjoy these hikes.

Emergency First Aid Course, this Sat. April 1: Openings still available

There’s still time to get in! There are a few spots available for anyone who would like to take Red Cross Emergency First-aid & CPR course (Instructor: David Hutzel) this Saturday. The course is open to all, and not limited to NHCC members.

Membership Night for the NHCC just two days away!

Just a reminder that it’s time to think about bicycles, fitness, friends, and sunshine and that means NHCC Membership Night — just two nights away! It’s for members, future members and just plain curious folks looking to get motivated into some cycling. Come out and see what the NHCC is all about and what you might expect from joining the cycling club this year. We’ll have memberships, jerseys and club information on-hand. Meet ride leaders and ask questions! You’ll find that we are a very inclusive cycling club with rides for all levels of ability.

Cycle Transitions logoCycle Transitions will also be on-site so you’ll have a convenient opportunity to pick up a CT membership, $30 for the whole year. For those who don’t know already, Cycle Transitions is a do-it-yourself community bicycle shop where you can work on your own bike, use their tools, and seek the guidance of mechanics on-site. So, you don’t need all sorts of bicycle know-how, just initiative to want to do it yourself!

Red Cross Emergency First Aid & CPR Course: Saturday, April 1, 2017

You just never know when an accident will happen and a little first-aid knowledge is a good thing. For anyone who would like to take a Red Cross Emergency First-aid & CPR course (Instructor: David Hutzel), we we be organizing the delivery of a course on Saturday, April 1, 2017. The cost is $75 per participant (payable to the instructor) and limited to a class size of 12. If we exceed that number, we may add a second course date.
