Wednesday January 24: Evening Urban Hike in Cobourg!

We’ll meet in the Arthur’s parking lot at the Best Western and venture out from there. We’ll weave through the streets and parks down toward the waterfront and beyond. Of course, since we’ll be right outside Arthur’s when we are all done, it’s a given that a few may want go in for little bite to eat or just a hot (or cold) drink. We’re looking at a nice clear night, and -4. So not bad, huh? Remember to bring a little $ if you intend to join others in Arthurs.

Be it known that the day will be 36 minutes longer than it was just January 1st! That means the days are getting looooonger folks!

Start time: 6:00pm
Meeting location: Parking lot of Arthur’s at the Best Western (Cobourg)
Hike leader: Jim Berg

Let us know you are coming! Be cool, and leave a comment.

NHCC Cross Country Skiing (Saturday Jan 20, & Sunday Jan. 21): There will be cross country skiing at Beagle Club both days as well. Anita has once again offered to guide a Level 1 ski for those just getting back to skiing or starting out for the first time. If you want to take it all in, bring your gear for both activites, a lunch to eat in between and take that short drive to the other parking lot! Make sure you bring fluids to keep hydrated.
Start time: 12:30pm (both days)
Ski Leaders: Maria Siemiaszko and Anita Macklin
Start location: Northumberland Forest, Beagle Club parking lot

Wild Rock was going to offer a demo day for cross country skis tomorrow at Kawartha Nordic but it has been postponed due to lack of snow. Yes folks, we seem to have all the snow locally and are the place to play outside! We’ll try to let you know when they reschedule in case anyone is in the market for skis but is not sure which are best for them.

Friday, January 19th: Afternoon Cross Country Ski

A few people have expressed interest in an afternoon ski for Friday afternoon. Please leave a comment if you are going to come out. The group may need to designate a leader and collectively figure out where they would like to ski.
Date: Friday, January 19th
Start Time: 1:30
Meeting Location: parking lot at Beagle Club
Ski Leader: TBD

Wednesday January 17: Evening Hike in Cobourg

This week our hike leader Colin will figure out a route in the west end, including the west boardwalk, Peace Park, Monk’s Cove and residential streets in Burnham-Westwood area. Note the later start time of 6:30pm. At the moment it’s looking like seasonally reasonable temperatures and possibly some snow, so it’ll be a nice night to explore! Optional après-hike social to be determined, so bring along a little extra moolah if you wish.

Start time: 6:30pm
Meeting location: parking lot behind Dutch Oven
Hike Leader: Colin Banfield

Tuesday, January 16th: Morning Hike

We will meet at the regular time of 9:30 am behind Craft Food House and proceed east along the Waterfront Trail. The route back will depend on conditions. The distance will be 6 to 7 km. Coffee and conversation afterwards at Craft.

Start Time: 9:30
Meeting Location: parking lot behind Craft Food House
Distance: 6 to 7 km
Hike Leader: Bruce Bellaire

Weekend Cross Country Skiing: January 13 and 14th

There is plenty of snow in the forest and it sounds like there may be more on the way so we’re planning on some weekend skiing. If the roads are dicey Saturday we may need to cancel but since we don’t meet until early afternoon we can evaluate the conditions and give some time for the road crews to get out so watch this post to see if there is a change in plans.

If anyone out there has just received skis for the first time, has not been out in a long while, or would prefer a relaxed speed and a shorter distance, Anita has offered to accompany such a group if there is a call for it on Saturday’s ski. Think of it as a Level 1 ski! Please let us know in advance if you think you would like to take her up on it so we can plan accordingly. Also, if skiers are interested in carpooling, start the conversation in the comments section.

Date: Saturday, January 13th
Start Time: 1:00
Meeting Location: parking lot at Beagle Club
Ski Leader (Level 1): Anita Mackin
Ski Leader (everyone else): Maria Siemiaszko

Date: Sunday, January, 14th
Start Time: 1:00
Meeting Location: parking lot at Beagle Club
Ski Leader: Maria Siemiaszko

Guests are welcome, just bring along a signed waiver for our insurance purposes!

Thursday, January 11th: morning cross country ski (hopefully!)

If it’s not raining (and fingers crossed that it won’t be) a cross country ski is in order! Right now it looks like the morning may be more favourable but if it turns out the afternoon looks more promising we can change that. Because of this, please comment whether you are interested and either click to receive other comments for this post or keep checking in to see what the final decision will be.

Time: 10:00 (but this may be adjusted according to the weather)
Meeting Location: parking lot at Beagle Club
Ski Organizer: Maria Siemiaszko

Wednesday January 10: Evening Hike, Cobourg

We had a fantastic turnout again last week and we trekked through blowing snow and cold weather. We expect much warmer this week with a high of 0°c. We are planning for January hikes to start from Cobourg and then switch back to Port Hope for February.

If you haven’t joined us on an evening hike yet, come on out! It’s open to everyone, members and non-members so bring a friend. If your 2017 membership has expired and/or you don’t have a 2018 membership (non-members), please bring a signed non-cycling waiver. It’s totally free, but we need it for administrative reasons.

If you are wondering about how difficult these hikes are, we usually cover about 6-9km, at a relatively brisk pace but not super crazy. It’s an “urban hike” so mostly on sidewalks. We often go into a local establishment afterward for a drink of some sort so don’t forget to throw a little $$ in your pocket.

Start time: 6:00pm
Meeting Location: Parking lot behind the Dutch Oven, Cobourg
Hike Leader: Jim Berg
