The Canada Day All levels Ride & Epic Potluck is a go!

The weather for tomorrow’s All Levels Ride & Epic Potluck is looking good! There’s just a 10% chance of rain, and a hundred percent chance of some stinking hot weather! Here’s what you need to remember to bring:

  • Chair to sit on
  • Shareable dish of something or other
  • Your favourite bevvy

We Ride at 10, and we Potluck at 11:30.

We have plenty of shade here at Randy & Anita’s house, so you’ll be comfortable, we hope. Come a bit early and claim a spot under a tree! Drop off your dish at the house where we have a few people who will keep it in the cool house while we ride.

There’s a heat warning!
We get it—it’s a wee bit hot & humid. Some may choose not to ride, and that’s quite legit too! You are welcome to join the non-cycling folks and just sit around in the shade feeling empathy for those sweating their bums off on bikes.  It’s all about celebrating Canada Day with friends, whichever way you want!

It’s not too late to decide you are coming. The beauty of Potluck is that it’s scalable for however many may come.  See you all tomorrow!

The July 1st Canada Day All Levels Ride & Epic Potluck Event

Just seven days away! There’s no better way to celebrate Canada Day than with good people, open roads, and great food. It’s our annual Canada Day All Levels Ride & Epic Potluck!

Date: Wednesday, July 1, 2026 (Rain Date: Thursday the 2nd)
Times:
Ride starts at 10:00am (Out-and-back format—45 minutes each way)
Potluck begins around 11:45am
Start Location (All Levels 1–4): 8303 Smylie Rd., Cobourg
RSVP: Let us know you’re coming via the Events Calendar in your Ride With GPS account

As usual, we’ll be all wrapped up by 1:00 so you won’t miss out on other Canada Day celebrations you may have.

The All Levels out-and-back Ride: 10am

This is one of the few rides where the entire club, Levels 1 through 4, rides together and finishes together! The format is simple—ride for 45 minutes at whatever pace you wish, then turn around and come back for the Epic Potluck.

The Epic Potluck

After the ride, we gather at Randy and Anita’s for our famous Epic Potluck. In true Canadian fashion, it’s a welcoming, casual, and joyfully unpredictable. Bring along your favourite dish to share—salads, fruits, butter tarts, maple-glazed anything, poutine-inspired snacks, or just your go-to homemade classic. Unpredictability makes it fun—If we end up with more dessert than dinner, well gosh darn, that’s a win too!

Please also bring a lawn chair and your favourite drink so you can sit under the shade of a tree with your NHCC friends and take in the summer vibes.

The really-horrible-weather Plan B: We aim to celebrate on July 1st, but if the forecast looks grim (as it sometimes does), we’ll move the event to Thursday, July 2. Stay tuned to the club calendar for updates.

Family, Friends & Non-Riders Welcome

Not everyone has to ride—friends and family are welcome! There’s plenty of space in the yard for relaxing while others sweat their bums off riding!

All are welcome, even if you are just digging out the bike for your first ride of the season. This event is all about connection—across levels, and across our shared love of Canada.

Planning Ahead—The Midland Riding Adventure in September

Hey NHCCers! The 3-night Midland Ride/Adventure is back after such a fantastic time was had last year. We’re putting together another great 3-night cycling getaway in beautiful Midland from Monday, September 14 to Thursday, September 17. Miche has developed cycling routes designed for all levels of riders, from shorter scenic rides to full-day adventures.

At its heart, this is a cycling trip. But this year, we’re expanding the options a little to make the weekend even more enjoyable and welcoming for everyone. Riders who prefer shorter or more relaxed routes will still have lots to enjoy for the rest of the day, and accompanying partners, family members, or friends who don’t cycle will also have plenty of opportunities to join in the fun. In addition to the rides, there are lots of nearby activities and attractions to explore, including:

  • Hiking in beautiful Awenda Provincial Park
  • Exploring Midland’s waterfront and trails
  • Visiting Sainte-Marie among the Hurons
  • Discovering the Wye Marsh Wildlife Centre
  • Relaxing poolside at the hotel
  • Or maybe taking a casual ride to Wasaga Beach for ice cream

Each morning we’ll gather for breakfast before heading out for the day’s rides and adventures. In the evenings, everyone can reconnect over dinner, stories from the day, laughs, and great conversation.

Accommodations:
We will likely reserve a block of rooms again at the Comfort Inn, which worked out extremely well last year. The hotel was very reasonably priced (around $100 per room), included breakfast, had an indoor pool, and the rooms were spacious enough to bring bicycles right inside. Once we get a better sense of numbers, we’ll confirm pricing and room details.

Interested? Here’s what to do:
Find the event starting Monday, September 14 in the Ride With GPS Events Calendar and click:

  • “Join” if you’re planning to come, or
  • “Interested” if you’d like to stay informed as plans develop.

There’s no obligation at this stage — we’re simply gathering preliminary numbers to help with planning. Joining or marking yourself as Interested is the best way to receive updates between now and the trip. And remember: you don’t have to commit to the full three nights (although we suspect you’ll wish you had!). Hotel accommodations will be booked independently closer to the date.

We hope you’ll join us for a few days of riding, relaxing, exploring, and enjoying great company in one of Ontario’s most scenic cycling areas.

It’s the final day to order a Club Jersey online!

The end is near! Okay, so not the end-of-the-world sort of near, but the online-club-jersey-store-closing type of near. You have the end of today to get your order placed! Hey, a club jersey makes you look snazzy and you might actually ride faster (not scientifically proven yet).

A note about fit: The new jerseys fit small—so you usually need to order a size up (or even two, if your comfort zone includes extra spaciousness). We’re going with the semi-race fit Elite model. Just click on the link and get going before it’s too late.

Bicycle Maintenance Workshop is tonight!

Tonight’s the night! It’s freezing cold outside, so what better excuse do you need to come talk bikes? Join us for our Basic Bicycle Maintenance Workshop tonight at 6:00 PM at the Baltimore Recreation Centre.

We’ll have Randy, Paul, Jason, and Helmut all on hand to collaborate, answer questions, and help you level up your bike maintenance skills. Learning this stuff now is the easy way — waiting until something mechanical goes sideways during a ride is the hard way.

Randy will also have a few essentials available for sale at great prices, including:

  • Inner tubes (check out the super space friendly TPUs!)
  • Patch kits
  • Tire levers
  • Chain lube
  • Basic maintenance tools
  • And a few other small but useful items

Bring your bike if you’d like (optional). We’ll have lots of room to spread out, and we’ll even show you a nifty little tool that measures chain wear. (Psssst… we’ll also explain what happens if you ignore a worn chain for too long.)

RSVP: If you’re planning to attend, please RSVP by “joining” the event through the Ride with GPS Events Calendar. Hope to see you there!

NHCC Online Jersey sales—store is open (until May 14th only)

Get them while you can! The online store closes on May 14th

Our new club jerseys will be supplied by Corsino Custom Jerseys and will be available online only through a dedicated store.

Members had the opportunity to try on samples at our Membership Night, and based on feedback, we’ve selected the semi-race fit (Elite) style.

Important sizing note:
The semi-race fit runs small and is designed to be close-fitting. Everyone who tried it on found they needed to order one size up from their usual size—and it will still feel snug.
For example, I (Anita) normally wear a Medium, but will be ordering a Large.

Ordering details:

  • The online store is open until May 14. After that, ordering will close and it may be some time before another opportunity is offered.
  • There are 9 days remaining to place your order.
  • If you tried on a jersey and don’t remember your size, feel free to contact us—we kept records and can help you confirm.
  • Estimated delivery date: June 30th (In time for Canada Day!)

Pricing:
Jerseys are $95 (plus tax), provided we receive a minimum order of 5 men’s and 5 women’s jerseys.

Cycling Safety Session: Monday May 4th, 6pm

This Monday is our Cycling Safety Essentials—Theory & Best Practices — it’s a compact 2-hour comprehensive information session designed to cover core cycling safety principles (no bike required). We don’t just talk about what to do, but we explore WHY. With a deeper understanding of traffic dynamics you’ll be safer and more confident. You’ll be able to apply the understanding in analytical ways to avoid potential road hazards. If you think you “already know” —we challenge you to come out—we promise you, EVERY club member could take away some new knowledge.

If you’ve ever thought riding tight to the curb is best…..we’ll convert you. Discover why announcing “clear” intersections is risky. We’ll discuss when and why to ride in the middle of the lane. Learn about when, why, and more importantly if riding two-abreast can be safer than single file. We’ll look at all the angles—from the perspective of cyclists, as well as sharing the road safely and intelligently with motorists.

(Pssst…..if you’ve been riding for years, all the more reason to come out—Be that person willing to learn some new best practices!)

All the details are on the RWGPS Events Calendar, where you can RSVP to let us know you are coming.

Prep Step: Get your Bike Ready

Holy chromoly, cycling season is here (almost!)

The sun is shining. Your heart’s pumpin‘ anticipation for the 10am meetup. You find your shorts buried in the drawer (strange… they definitely shrunk). You’re ready for blastoff. You and your bike? Reunited at last. You’re groovin’. You might even show up early.

Start Strava. Grab bike.
…What the heck??? A flat tire?!

Now your hair’s on fire and your heart’s pumping backwards (still unclear if that’s medically possible).

Let’s go Proactive!

ABC Check (your 60-second miracle worker)
A – Air: Tires pumped?
B – Brakes: They stop you… right?
C – Chain: Not squeaking like a family of mice?

Charge ALL the things
Lights. Bike computer (Garmin/Wahoo). Electronic shifting.
If it beeps, blinks, or shifts—charge it.

Lube That Chain
Happy chain = smooth ride = fewer weird noises = happier you.

Quick Spin Around the Block
This is where your bike whispers, “Hey… remember me?” Better now than 5 km into the ride.

Helmet Check (protect the noggin)
Level. Snug. No wobble. Straps in a nice little “V” under your ears.

Homework (yes, actual homework)
Print your Emergency Contact Info and carry it.
Adds approximately 0.0002 g of weight (0.0004 g if you go full luxury with a ziplock snack bag).

A little prep now = a lot less “whattheheck???” later.

Prep Step: Get Sized for a Club Jersey

Starting this season, NHCC club jerseys will be sold online only. In the past, the club carried inventory for in-person purchase, but once existing inventory is depleted, that will no longer be the case. We’re moving to a new supplier (Corsino)—which means new cuts and fits.

Hey, whoooooahhh—what about trying one on first?

We’ve got you covered! For a limited time, our supplier has provided a Fit Kit Size Collection, allowing you to:

  • See, try on, and admire all available sizes for two styles: Quick-Dry (Comfort Fit) and Elite (Semi-Race Fit)
  • Decide your preferred size and style without any pressure to buy

Even if you plan to wait before ordering, this is your chance to know your perfect fit before the online store opens.

How to Check Them Out:
Send us a quick message at: secretary@northumberlandhillscyclingclub.com
We’ll send you the address so you can drop by and try the jerseys

Bonus Tip: While you’re trying the Fit Kit, you can also check if any of our existing cash & carry inventory works for you—bonus if it does, because they’re bargain priced (plus instant gratification!)

Cost

Cash & Carry Jerseys: Regular short sleeve ($85 including tax), Premium short sleeve ($125 including tax)

New Corsino Jerseys (online): Short sleeve (approximately $130 including tax)
