Monday, June 15th: Commuter Bike Ride

The first activity for the Cobourg Active Transportation Week is a commuter bike ride Monday morning. Retirees welcome to help escort workers to the downtown core!

Murdoch Mysteries will be filming downtown Cobourg on Monday. Hang around to watch if you have some time after the ride.  Paul will bring his tandem in case the star wants a little tour of Cobourg.

Date: Monday, June 15th
Time: ride starts at 8:00 am
Start Location: King and Burnham Streets, meet at the solar farm on the northwest corner

The Cobourg Active Transportion Committee has a week full of fun activites planned to get everyone out and moving with bike rides and walks. Check out the Town of Cobourg website for a full list of what’s going on. As members of NHCC, we appreciate the benefits of cycling for fun, fitness, friendship, and a a viable method of transportation. Support Active Transportaion Week and spread the word!

Sunday, June 14th, Level 3 and 4

Sunday’s ride will be a repeat of Thursday’s. Payne has gravel at the north end by the new solar farm but we rode it today and it was OK. If you’d prefer to avoid it, you can keep riding on Community Centre Road into Baltimore and catch Nagle from there.

Date: Sunday, June 14th
Time: 10:00
Start Location: Donegan Park
Ride Coordinator: there may not be a ride coordinator on site Sunday, but seeing how Level 3 and 4 riders are expected to have a map and be self sufficient, you can figure it out 🙂

Thursday, June 11th: Levels 3 and 4 ride

The weather actually looks good for Thursday so we’ll give the “It’s All Downhill From Here” ride another attempt. As Klaus has mentioned, there are opportunities to shorten or lengthen the ride if we want.

Date: Thursday, June 11th
Time: 10:00
Start Location: Donegan Park
Map: “It’s All Downhill From Here” printable route map here
Ride Coordinator: Maria Siemiaszko

Let me know if you plan to ride because if no one can make it I’m going to ride in Trent Hills instead.

Cancelled: Monday, June 8th: Level 1 ride

Anyone who was out on the first ice cream run this year on May 16th will no doubt remember the horrible “improvement” to the path through Peace Park. Paul Mills took a couple members of town council out for a bike ride there and now we have reports of a proper improvement, so Monday’s ride will include a ride to see for ourselves!

Date: Monday, June 8th
Time: 6:30
Meeting Location: parking lot behind Dutch Oven
Ride Leader: Maria Siemiaszko

Jill Mills, February 8, 1946 – June 2, 2015: The NHCC has lost a friend

Jill MillsOn Tuesday June 2, 2015 a very near and dear friend of the NHCC, Jill Dolores Mills, danced her last waltz. Those who have been with the NHCC since it’s inception know Jill as the constant, quiet supporter behind her husband Paul Mills (founding member and tireless supporter). We had hoped that Jill would be around for many more seasons, supporting our Presqu’ile Picnic rides and being there whenever help was needed but apparently the universe has greater plans for Jill.

We extend our condolences to Paul Mills both as a Club and as a friend. Visitation will take place at MacCoubrey Funeral Home, 30 King Street East, Cobourg, ON, on Saturday, June 6 from 3:00-5:00 p.m. Funeral service will be held on Sunday, June 7 at 1:00 p.m. in the MacCoubrey Funeral Home chapel. Those who wish to make a donation in her name, please do so at Cycle Transitions, (by cheque) c/o 452A King St. E., Cobourg, ON K9A 1M6

Please note that bicycle parking will be available, but it’s appreciated if you would leave a comment letting us know you will arrive by bicycle so that adequate parking is arranged.

Sunday June 6, 2015: Ride to Newcastle and Back

Doesn’t matter if you missed it on Thursday, we’ll do it again on Sunday. We are taking the Waterfront Trail all the way to Newcastle and back again. These “out and back” rides are great if you don’t know how far you want to go because you can just turn around at any given time. If you do the whole route from the Town Hall, it’s 57 km but add another 22km to that if you cycle over to the start point from Cobourg.

Start time: 10:00am
Start location: Port Hope Town Hall parking lot
Level of difficulty: Level 3 and Level 4 (mostly)
Route Map: 57k printable route map here or view it on Ride with GPS

Starting in Cobourg? Leave a comment to let others know so you can ride over as a group at 9:30am.

Thursday June 4, 2015: Ride to Newcastle and Back

Nice and easy route, and hopefully some reasonable weather for Thursday. Waterfront Trail all the way to Newcastle! It’s not terribly hilly, though there is a little up-hill-ish feeling on the way back. If you want to shorten the distance, just turn around at any point and come back because the route back is the same as the route there. This of course, makes it suitable for multiple levels. It’s 57 km if you leave from Port Hope Town Hall, but add another 22km to that if you cycle over to the start point from Cobourg.

Start time: 10:00am
Start location: Port Hope Town Hall parking lot
Level of difficulty: Level 3 and Level 4 (mostly)
Route Map: 57k printable route map here or view it on Ride with GPS

If you are planning to bike over from Cobourg, leave a comment to let others know so people can meet in the Canadian Tire parking lot at 9:30am (it takes 20-25 minutes to bike to Port Hope). While you’re at it, why not leave a comment to let people know which group you would like to ride with (Level 3 or 4)?
