Sunday May 22: Mixed Levels ride along Waterfront Trail West

This Sunday we’ll take the Waterfront Trail westbound over to Port Hope and continue along the lakeshore. Riders can turn around at any point they wish, making the ride as long or as short as desired. The route is relatively easy except for the big hill to get across Port Hope. No route map necessary for this ride since it’s the signed Waterfront Trail.

General notes about Sunday morning Mixed Level Rides: All club members are welcome to participate, though there won’t be a designated leader for each Level as usually occurs on the regular evening rides. All those riding must be equipped with a route map (unless it’s the Waterfront Trail), carry a tire changing kit with a spare tube. The group will start out together, breaking off into smaller groups of similar speed and ability.

Start time: 10:00am
Start location: The park on Carlisle St. between Ewing and Westwood.
Ride Leader: Roberto Almeida

Ride Cancellation Notice: Rain Rain Go Away!!

Tonight’s ride (Monday, May 16) cancelled: For those who are really hoping the rain will just disappear it’s not to be the case. Radar shows a little clearing about 5:30 but then more rain is on it’s way about 6:00. We’re making the decision to cancel tonight’s ride. There’s still the All Levels ride on Wednesday night that you are most welcome to participate in! See you then!

Thursday May 19: Level 4 evening ride. Let’s talk hills!

So last week’s level 4 ride was fast and fun (with a few hills). This one will have definitely have only the finest hills! Build strength in those legs and max out your heart rate on Bickle Hill followed by the Jamieson twins. We never said Level 4 was gonna be easy now, did we? We won’t do crazy distance though…just 39k.

Wednesday May 18: ALL Levels Ride & Social at The Mill

This will be the first of our All Levels Ride & Social that takes place the third Wednesday of each month. The rides starts and finishes at The Mill Restaurant where after a one hour ride we’ll head inside to the Pub area for those wishing to order up beer and snacks.

How the All Levels Ride works: There’s just one route out-and-back and you ride for time instead of distance which means that everyone starts and finishes together regardless of how fast or slow you ride. It’s a great opportunity for people to try out the next level up and if you can’t keep up there’s no worries because you can always just drop back to the level coming up behind you. There will be a designated Leader for each of the Levels 1, 2, 3 and 4 who will operate like pace-bunnies maintaining the appropriate pace for your chosen level of difficulty. That way you can see what it feels like at the next level!

Time: 6:00–7:30pm (ride) 7:30-9:00pm (Social)
Start location: The Mill parking lot
Route map: 36km printable route map here, or view it on Ride with GPS

Important: Please RSVP so that we can ensure adequate reservation for space at The Mill

Monday, May 16th: Level 1 ride

Notice of Cancellation: Last minute we know, but the radar is not showing very cycling-friendly weather tonight so the ride will be cancelled. Sorry folks!

It’s supposed to be nicer out on Monday so we’ll ride. Although we’re not expecting any of that thick white rain, it’s not yet warm enough for ice cream, but first really nice evening we get we’ll do our first ice cream run so stay tuned! In the meantime, bundle up and let’s get out there!

Date: Monday, May 16th

Start Location: parking lot behind the Dutch Oven
Ride Leader: Maria Siemiaszko

Tuesday May 17: Level 2 evening ride in Port Hope

This week the Level 2 ride is going to start from a new location, Port Hope. Pam Tate will be leading the ride through Hope Township on some beautiful country roads at a nice and easy pace. The nature of any terrain outside of the town of Cobourg is such that it won’t be as flat but Pam will endeavour to keep it easy for everyone! We’ll park in the parking lot of Canton United Church in Hope Township.

Ride Leader: Pamela Tate
Start time: 6:00pm
Start location: Canton United Church, 4th Line of Hope just east of County Rd. 10

Wed. May 18th: Special Morning Event & 50km Ride

This coming Wednesday morning the NHCC will participate in a special event announcement regarding Northumberland County’s Cycling Master Plan following which our Club will then ride one of the County’s five official cycling routes, the Glorious Ganaraska Cycling Trail described as a “relatively level 30km route that guides you through farm fields, along the banks of the Ganaraksa River and past heritage buildings”. There will be some pre-ride announcements by local government and economic development officials at the county building in Cobourg and then the Club will ride to Port Hope to ride the official route.

We’d love to have as many available Club members out for this event as there will be media coverage (wearing your NHCC jersey if you have one would be great!). By starting in Cobourg we’ll be adding distance to the route for a total of 47km.

Thursday May 12: Level 4 Evening ride to Harwood (Butter tarts!)

Get those bikes out and get ready for a good & hilly but wonderful ride in beautiful weather! The forecast shows a high of 23°C which is about as good as it gets before turning colder for the weekend. We are heading to Harwood where we’ll pause a little for a snack at the store, re-load water bottles at the artesian well then ride a nice fast route back. There are hills…and there’ll be speed, making the Level 4 ride best suited for those with road bikes. All together, we’re looking at 55k.

Level 4 expectations: All riders are expected to have a route map and a tire changing kit as well as a spare tube. Level 4 is expected to depart as a group and may possibly stay together, but also may break off naturally into smaller groups according to ability. The pace is expected to be 22km+ on average.

Ride Leader: Anita Macklin
Start time: 6:00pm
Start location: The arena on Furnace St.
