Thursday July 26th: Route Suggestions, anyone?

We’ll choose the start time and location….but for this Thursday we’re hoping that the membership will share some ideas and come up with a route. All that’s needed is for someone to say, “I’ve got a route in mind,” let the others know by making a comment, then show up at the designated starting point with directions and voilà! A route is born.

Start time: 9am
Start location: St. Mary’s School parking lot

If you’ve never used the commenting section below, just click on “Comments” and then it should be self-explanatory after that.  🙂

Easy ride and Ice Cream: Wednesday July 25th, 7:00pm

We’re going to keep it EASY. And what we mean by that, is that Wednesday nights (as Mondays are too) are meant for new members, inexperienced folks, experienced folks on recovery rides, and those who just enjoy the casual atmosphere of a slow group ride. And just to make sure it stays easy—if it’s hot outside, bring a couple of bucks and we’ll stop at the Ice Cream place down at the pier for some snackage.

No formal route map for this ride……just a slow pedalling pace out to Pebble Beach Rd., back along the boardwalk, over to the ice cream joint, then out to cover the east end of town. Easy……and flat too!

Start time: 7:00pm
Location: Cobourg Memorial Rink and Recreation Centre
Ride Leader: Paul Mills

Paul will familiarize everyone with the intended route prior to departure—then some pack leaders can volunteer to take a group and out we go!

The Winner of Week Three, Tour de Northumberland Hills

The Tour de Northumberland Hills is almost over and it was a huge success. Lots of people rode much more than the minimum distance and by accounts it was a lot of fun. A HUGE thanks to George over there at Port Hope Bicycle for sponsoring this event and an even bigger thank you to all who participated. If you haven’t already done so, get your remaining mileage posted on the spreadsheet by 9am Monday morning.

The Grand Prize winner of the Tour de Northumberland Hills will win a blue and white helmet, a perfect match for the club jerseys. Keep your eye on the comment section here, George will let us all know the moment he’s made the draw (on Monday, July 23rd) and who the lucky person is!

RIDE in Port Hope—Tuesday July 24th Easy Ride (7:00)

There seems to be enough interest in the Port Hope ride that we will extend them to the end of August. For the month of July we’ll be meeting every Tuesday at the Port Hope Town Hall at 7:00. If you wish to ride over there from Cobourg, meet at Canadian Tire at 6:20.

A note about speed:
The pace of the group on our evening rides is designed to serve the needs of the newest riders. And that means EASY! No neck breaking speed, no pushing up humungo hills……just some comfortable paced pedalling. Sure, the experienced among us might also be there, but that’s because we are there to support, encourage, and ride alongside our new riders. Nobody gets left behind, and we take as many breaks as necessary to ensure the operative term here….EASY!

Start time: 7:00 pm (6:20 from Canadian Tire Cobourg)
Start location: Port Hope Town Hall
Ride leader: Pam Tate

Please comment below so Pam can have an idea how many might be there and plan a suitable route. Also please mention if you want to ride over from Cobourg.

EASY RIDE: Monday July 23rd, 7:00pm

Something new: This time we’re going to try leaving it up to you fabulous club members who like to ride on Monday’s to talk amongst ourselves (via the comments below) and decide on a route. Starting and finishing however, at the Arena on Furnace St.

It may be a small turnout this Monday due to the fact that some of the regulars are cycling down in New York State and others might be attending the Cycle Transitions meeting.

But if you are available and you want to ride, why not get the conversation going about a route!  🙂

Start time: 7:00pm
Location: Cobourg Memorial Rink and Recreation Centre
Ride Leader: Volunteer Needed

Let’s see how this “self-organization” method works out….

No Tour de France at 9pm tonight, but we ride & eat wings anyways

Apparently, tonight of all nights, TSN won’t be airing the Tour de France until 12am. That’s a real downer, and changes the Ride, Wings, and Tour de France to just a Ride & Wings. Ahhhh…..don’t you just love TSN? We’ll still go to The Mill for the half price wings. We can speculate on who will get caught doping next……and it will still be fun to see fellow club members without helmets.

Sharon Lynn-Weese will ride 941km for the Canadian Tree Fund

Fellow NHCC member Sharon Lynn Weese is doing her part for the environment in Canada by taking part in a 941km bike ride, the Tour des Trees to raise funds for the Canadian Tree Fund. She’s made a $3500 commitment for the cause and only three weeks remain to raise funds. Can we, as fellow club members show our support and help her out with some pledges? Every little bit helps. Once she reaches her goal she’ll be able to sleep again at night 🙂

One Tree = One Ton of Carbon Reduction.

The Problem:
Trees are being destroyed at an alarming rate due to climate change, pollution, neglect, invasive insects and diseases. Entire species of trees are being removed from our neighbourhoods. For example the Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) has laid bare many streets in Toronto and has worked its way to Oshawa as it heads east. It’s only a matter of time before the EAB reaches Cobourg and other communities where it will kill hundreds of Ash Trees.

How is Sharon helping?
This August she is combining her love of cycling with her love for trees and the great outdoors by cycling 585 miles (941 km) through Oregon with the Tour des Trees to raise money for The Canadian TREE Fund. The Canadian TREE Fund promotes the benefits of trees and professional tree care by providing funding for research and education.

How can you help?
By sponsoring Sharon. To participate in the Tour des Trees Sharon must raise a minimum of $3500.00.

DONATE ONLINE: Sponsor Sharon Lynn-Weese
DONATE BY CHEQUE: (made payable to the Canadian TREE Fund) Please mail to:
Sharon Lynn-Weese – 905 Otto Drive Cobourg Ontario K9A 5Y3

All donations will be listed in the annual Canadian TREE Funds Donor Recognition Brochure. Your generosity will be rewarded through one of the 4 donor recognition levels ranging from $10 to over $1,000. Awards vary from a Thank you Certificate to a beautiful Aluminium Sculpture provided by Hoselton Studios.

Thank you for your support! Please email or call Sharon if you have any questions (905) 372-4481. Or pass along the word to others you think would be interested in helping our TREES!

New Website Section: ROAD HAZARDS

There is a new place on our website to report road hazards that could include construction, broken glass, fresh gravel, closures, mean dogs, etc. If you know of any such locations, please go to the new ROAD HAZARDS section and make a comment to let others know.

Sunday July 22nd, Ride to Harwood and Back (59 km)

Same as Thursday…..route map says 42km but we start from Donegan Park making for a total of 59km. There is a shorter option however:

Shorter route (42km): If you wish to do just 42 km, meet at the Dale Rd. for 9:20am and the regular group will arrive there at around that time and we can all head up to Harwood together if we wish.

Bring a few bucks if you want to pick up something from the Harwood Store. Re-filling water bottles with fresh cold water in Harwood is free! Gotta like that!

Start time: 9am (Long route)  9:20am (short route)
Start location: Donegan Park (Long route)  Dale Rd. store (short route)
Route map: Precious Corners to Harwood route map here

Please mention if you are coming and your intended route. (There may be slightly less riders on this one since a number of folks are taking off on a week long bike tour)
