Monday, June 12th: Level 1 ride and ice cream run

We’ve waited a long time for some summer-like weather so we’ll celebrate with our first ice cream run of the year. We will do the majority of the ride before stopping at Dairy Dreams for ice cream, then it’s just a short jaunt back to the parking lot. Bring some money! 🍦
Date: Monday, June 12th
Time: 6:30
Meeting Location: parking lot behind Dutch Oven
Ride Leader: Maria Siemiaszko

Sunday June 11: Another Waterfront ride option, Eastbound!

It’s going to be a great day for cycling! Roberto is leading another Waterfront Trail option for those wishing to go Eastbound from Cobourg. This will be an All Levels ride. Any club member can participate, choosing your own pace. The route goes “out-and-back” which means that you turn around at any point making it a distance that you are comfortable with. The group start together and break up into smaller ones based on speed and distance. Some may even choose to do 100k by going all the way into Presqu’ile Park to the lighthouse if they are allowing bicycles in (the park is closed for camping at the moment due to water levels).

Please note that weekend rides don’t have individual ride leaders and sweeps assigned for each of the levels. It’s a multi-level group ride and participants will naturally break into smaller groups, so plan to pair up with riders of similar ability.

It’s helpful if you are planning to ride to leave a comment indicating your preference regarding Level of difficulty you want to do (Level 1, 2, 3 or 4), and your planned distance or time. It lets others also plan in advance!

Start time: 9:30am
Start location: The arena on Furnace St.
Ride Coordinator: Roberto
Route: Waterfront Trail Eastbound (Printable Map) or Link to it on Ride with GPS.

Sunday, June 11th: Waterfront Adventure Ride!

Sunday looks like it will be a beautiful day for a ride and a few friends and I are going to ride from Whitby to Pickering and back, and if anyone wants to join us they are welcome to. It promises to be to be a bit of an adventure as the spring rains and floods have changed up the Waterfront Trail in some areas! Be prepared to make a detour or two and push your bike at times. Bring fluids. If anyone wants to stop for lunch at a restaurant, The Waterfront Restaurant is right on the trail in Pickering and there may be a few food trucks around.  The other option is to bring your lunch and enjoy it at a waterfront park (which is what I am doing).  Because the ride is along the trail and back, everyone can make what the want of it so it is suitable for all levels. For level 1 riders, be advised that there are a few smallish uphills.

Let us know you if you are coming so we can look for you in the parking lot, and whether you want to make a restaurant stop for lunch. There are no ride leaders for the different levels for this ride. By leaving a comment, you can find if someone else is interested in doing the same type of ride as you so you can group together.

Date:  Sunday, June 11th
Level of difficulty:  you can make it whatever level you want by turning around at what you want to be your halfway point.   For reference, the distance from the parking lot to The Waterfront Restaurant and back is just under 40km
Time: be ready to start riding at 10:30
Meeting Location:  the large parking lot across from the Heydenshore Pavillion (589 Water Street, Whitby)
Ride Organizer:  Maria Siemiaszko

Distance: approx 40 km

Just a few hills (says Bruce)

Thursday June 1st: Morning and Evening Rides

Morning Ride (10:30am):
The event: The Warkworth BIA will soon be receiving a Bike Friendly DBIA designation and this Thursday morning Northumberland County will be announcing a summer long social media contest and resources targeting cycling tourists. They are hoping that as many cyclists as possible will attend the media launch and be the first to enter the contest. There will be several short announcements before the photo ops after which we can head out for a nice, hilly, 38km route.

Lunch: There are several options for lunch following the ride so bring some money if you’d like to partake! If you’d like to be part of the launch and lunch but don’t fancy riding, the Warkworth Lilac Festival is on and there is a lovely trail by the river which features over 65 varieties of lilacs. Please comment if you are attending so we can ensure enough restaurant space.

Time: 10:30 media launch, ride immediately following photos
Location: Warkworth Town Hall, 40 Main Street, Warkworth (right beside the RBC)
Ride Leader: Maria Siemiaszko

Evening Ride (6:30pm):
This is a great route and it keeps getting rained out so we’ll try again! Lots of rolling ups and downs, with plenty of downhill and two distances to choose from. Fast and fun and there are fabulous scenery to be had over Rice Lake and some smooth rolling pavement along Rice Lake Scenic Drive. We’ll stop briefly in Harwood to re-load water bottles.
Start time: 6:30pm
Start location: Hamilton Township Offices parking lot (Burnham and Majestic Hills Rd.)
Distance: 38 or 47km
Ride Leader: Anita Macklin
Route map (37k): Printable map (to come), or link on Ride with GPS

Ride postponement notice: Rain. Again. Despite the radar and other forecasts, it is indeed raining. Sunday looks better, so we will ride tomorrow morning instead. All the same ride details, except your ride leader will be Anita Macklin.

Monday, May 22nd: morning and evening rides

It’s a day off work for most of us which means there is more time to ride! In the morning all levels head out from Hastings on the Lang Hastings Trail towards Peterborough and can ride as far as they want before turning back. For those who make it to Peterborough there is a Tim Hortons once you get to Lansdowne if you want to stop in for a coffee. There is also ice cream not very far outside of Hastings so bring some money along with fluids and snacks. In the evening, Dennis will lead the regular Level 1 ride which will wind it’s way towards Monks Cove with breaks along the route.
