ALL THE WHEELY FUN CLUB NEWS!
Tuesday May 16, Level 2 Ride, Willmott
Let’s try again. Weather seems to be drier, but bring a wind-proof layer to keep the wind chill down. We will have a short orientation and safety talk. Please bring a floor pump if you have one and are coming by car. Also, check the maximum pressure for your tires (located on the side-wall of the tire) so we know what we are aiming for.
This will be a “break us in slowly” ride from the Willmott parking lot, out on the Waterfront Trail and back. There is one hill. We will rest lots. No one is ever left behind. We will be staying to the lower end of the Level 2 speed and distance so think 15 kpm average and overall distance 15-20 klm.
Guests may ride with a waiver and 5$. (goes toward membership). Helmets and fun are mandatory.
Start Time: 6:30 pm
Ride Leader: Geoffrey Honey
Start Location: 210 Willmott St. Cobourg (parking lot Old Coke Plant/ Sleep Country)
Monday May 15: Evening Level 2/3 ride
Much better riding conditions than last week! We lave at 6:30 sharp, so plan to arrive a little earlyish. And, bring your membership cards please. Non-members are welcome to ride as but need to bring a signed Guest Waiver and $5 (insurance reasons, you know!)
Date: Monday, May 15th
Start Time: 6:30
Ride Leader: Roberto Almeida

Re-start of the Official Cycling Season on Monday
Weather appears to have returned to normal so we will re-start the season. All regularly scheduled evening rides will resume starting this Monday. See you all on the road.
Monday, May 15th: Level 1 ride
It’s finally looking promising so it looks like a go for the first official Level 1 ride this year Please bring your membership card or if you haven’t joined yet, your completed membership form with payment, or a guest waiver and $5 if you want to check us out first.
Helmets are mandatory.
Time: 6:30
Location: parking lot in industrial mall on Wilmot Street
Ride Leader: Maria Siemiaszko
Wednesday May 10: Level 3 Evening Ride
Here we go again…let’s get the Level 3 evening ride started! This route is 25km long. We will start out small and add a little more distance each week as the season progresses, based on the developing needs of the group. Don’t worry about keeping up with the crowd—It’s a no-drop ride, we will work together and support each other.
Notes: Helmets are mandatory. Please bring your membership card with you. If you mailed in your membership forms, your cards will be issued to you at the ride.
Ride leader: Mike McLellan
Start Time: 6:30pm
Route Map: View the link on Ride with GPS
Start Location: Westwood Park (Carlisle St.)
Mike has coordinated the Level 3 ride program for a number of years now, and with his safety training and experience you’ll be in good hands! Mike coordinates a number of level 3 leaders that you’ll meet as the season progresses. He’s been a member of the NHCC as long as we can remember!
Thursday May 11: Level 4 evening ride
Here we go, we’re going to give it another try. At the moment there’s only a 30% chance of rain, leaving 70% likelihood that it won’t! Just like last week’s intended ride:
We’ll do a nice 37km route called “It’s all Downhill from Here”. It is a little uphill-ish in the first half, but then lots of downhill to make it fun. We’ll keep moving, making sure nobody gets cold!
Level 4: You gotta be prepared—have the route map (either on your phone or on paper), have a tire changing kit and the usual bike tools on board. Level 4 departs as a group and usually stays together, but sometimes may break into smaller groups according to speed and ability. The pace is expected to average about 22km+. Road bikes are required and you need to be prepared for a little speed and/or hills.
Ride Leader: Anita Macklin
Start time: 6:30pm
Route Map: “It’s All Downhill From Here”, 37km route map or link on Ride with GPS
Start location: Donegan Park (D’Arcy St.)
So how ’bout it? You coming to ride? Leave a comment, let us know. It’s kinda nice when we know how many to expect.
Thursday May 11, Morning Level 3 Ride
Morning ride, hopefully minus the rain and maybe even a little warmth! Bruce will lead the group again this week, except the starting point will be from the Arena on Furnace St. It won’t be crazy long, or crazy hilly, so it should be fun!
Ride Leader: Bruce Bellaire
Start time: 10:00am
Distance: 26km
Route: Ontario, Dale, Racetrack, Harwood, Hwy45, Nagel, etc.
Level of Difficulty: 3
Start Location: Cobourg Memorial Arena (on Furnace St.)
Bruce has been a member of the NHCC since it’s earliest days. He’s a certified CanBike instructor, volunteers extensively with the Bicycle Action Committee of Sustainable Cobourg and is also very active in the operation of Cycle Transitions. Bruce has a wealth of cycling knowledge from years of cycling experience!
The NHCC temporarily switching to Pre-Season mode
It’s stopped raining (well sort of….in most places)! However, the cold persists and there is still a lot of uncertainty with rain. The weather being so uncooperative and cold, we don’t want to post rides that would subsequently be cancelled. So, for the time being we are going to switch back to Pre-Season mode.
Pre-season mode: We post rides only as weather permits, usually a couple of days in advance as we monitor weather conditions. Rides may fall on any day of the week.
Once the weather returns to seasonal we’ll announce the re-start of the Official Regular Season so that “regular” evening rides can resume. Hopefully soon!
Don’t forget that there’s a Bicycle Maintenance Workshop this coming Thursday evening. Given the weather, why not come out and learn to change a flat? There’s still plenty of spots available, but pre-registration is required.
Thursday, May 11th: Bike Maintenance Workshop
We haven’t able to get as much riding in as we’d like with all this rain, but rain or shine we are having another bike maintenance workshop May 11th. Learn how to clean your bike, clean and lubricate your chain, and change a tire. This is a hands on workshop so you will get an opportunity to practice some of these skills right away. Bring your bike and don’t wear your good clothes! Pre-registration is required and can be done by sending an email to:
nhcycling2010@gmail.com.
Date: Thursday, May 11th
Time: doors open 6:30, workshop runs from 7 to 9:00
Location: Cycle Transitions, 739 D’Arcy Street
Cost: $10, members of Cycle Transitions free
Ride Cancellations: Thursday Night and Sunday’s Ride & BBQ too
Another day, and more cancellations: The forecast is grim, grim. So much for the much anticipated opening week of cycling season! We’ll just do a re-set on the start of cycling season and try it all again next week. Tonight is pure rain and Sunday is forecasting 5°c and 70% likelihood of rain.
No evening ride tonight, and the Ride and BBQ for this Sunday will be re-scheduled to a future date and we’ll let you know when that new date has been established, likely sometime in June.
