Sunday June 23: “Uphill Downhill” ride (36, 56 or 69km)

It’s gonna be a hot one tomorrow! 30°C and that’s before humidex. Bring lots of water. Three distances to choose from. Regardless of what distance you choose, it’s primarily uphill for the first half and downhill for the second half. All three routes are the same for the first part and the last part. The difference being in the middle:

36km riders turn right at 17k onto Speechly, everyone else goes left.
56km riders turn right at 26km onto Broomfield, 69km riders continue straight.

Start time: 10:00am
Start location: The Arena on Furnace St. in Cobourg
Route Maps:

69km printable route map here, or link to Ride with GPS

-(56km): Mike McLellan
-(69km): Randy Albon

Please indicate below if you are willing to be the ride leader for any of these distances. See you all then!

Thursday EVENING ride, June 20th: 31, or 48km

In case you can’t make the morning ride, no worries. We’re trying it out to see if an evening ride will work for the Level 3 and 4s too. Same route as the morning group, but we start at 6:30 at the Town Hall! Lights on your bikes will be required. (Note: There is no 64km option for this ride, due to daylight hours)

The difference between the Level 3 and Level 4 is that the Level 3 takes a short cut by turning south on Morrish Church Rd and heading down to the Lakeshore, while the Level 4 continues West until they turn south on Newtonville Rd to travel south to the Lakeshore.

Start time: 6:30pm
Start location: Port Hope Town Hall
Route map, Level 4 (48km): 48km printable route map or link to Ride with GPS
Route map, Level 3 (31km): 31km printable route map or link to Ride with GPS
Ride leader (Level 3): Pam Tate
Ride leader (Level 4): George Hussey

We need volunteers for ride leaders. Anyone want to take that on? It’s easy stuff! If you are riding on this EVENING ride, it’s important that you comment below that you are coming so that we can plan accordingly.

Thursday MORNING ride, June 20th: 31, 48, or 64km

We’re going to have two options for riding on Thursday. Morning time for those who are available and evening for those who prefer an evening ride. Both are identical rides, just different times.

The difference between the Level 3 and Level 4 is that the Level 3 takes a short cut by turning south on Morrish Church Rd and heading down to the Lakeshore, while the Level 4 continues West until they turn south on Newtonville Rd to travel south to the Lakeshore.

If you want to add 14km to the route making it 64km, be at Canadian Tire in Cobourg and bike over to the start location at Port Hope Town Hall.

Start time: 10:00am (9:30am if you start at Canadian Tire)
Start location: Port Hope Town Hall

Ride leader: Anita Macklin

Tuesday June 18th, Ride from Port Hope at 6:30

This ride is typically a little different from the regular rides in that the speed and difficulty level varies according to the participants who show up. We’re anticipating this Tuesday night ride to be a little speedier than than some of the others. It’s going to be a great night for riding! Sunset doesn’t occur until 8:58 and the forecast looks reasonable for a change.

If you wish to leave from Canadian Tire in Cobourg, it will add another 14km in total to your ride. Also, if you’re leaving from Cdn Tire, plan to be there ready to go in the parking lot at 6:05. (Arriving at the Port Hope Town Hall for 6:30)

Start time: 6:30pm
Start location: Port Hope Town Hall
Sunset: 8:58 (lights required at 8:28pm)
Ride Leader: George Hussey

“Still Riding to Survive” — Let’s support Sharon Ingle

Below is a request from our fellow club member, Sharon Ingle, to help support her (by making a small donation), to her Healing Cycle ride this coming Sunday. She is nothing short of an Inspiration for all of us!

SharonTo my new Northumberland cycling friends-
As many of you may know I just moved to Brighton and joined the bike club. I have been fighting advanced breast cancer for 5 years now, with every treatment and surgery you can think of. According to the Dr’s I should not be alive given the aggressiveness of the cancer. However, I “ride to survive” which so far has kept me on the upside of the road!

I had brain surgery in December as the cancer metastasized there and now I am doing a very aggressive radiation program that has never been tried before. The Dr says I have 6 months but then again he does not bike! Anyway, radiation finishes this Saturday and I have decided to participate in The Healing Cycle on Sunday to raise money for palliative care. I have participated in his ride since it’s beginning and hope by participating this year I will inspire someone else fighting this tough battle to get up and get moving doing something they love! My palliative care Dr Sauls is riding the 100kms.

I am asking for support from the Northumberland Hills cyclists by way of a small donation to help get me up and over those hills! This year I am riding 50 k due to the radiation fatigue but all participation helps! If you can help I would be very grateful. Please think of me this Sunday on the group ride and send hill energy!
Thank you

Sharon Ingle

Wednesday June 19: Level 2 ride, 27km (mostly flat)

This ride will start at Donegan Park and we will head east out of town on the “Waterfront Trail”. This is a nice flat-ish route that will allow Level 2’s to start increasing their ride lengths.

Start time: 6:30pm
Start location: Donegan Park parking lot
Route Map: Printable route map with elevations or, View the link on Ride with GPS
Difficulty: Level 2
Ride Leader: Mike Mclellan

Forecast says a high of 24° for Wednesday

Monday, June 17th, Level 1 (easy, easy) ride

We’ll hope for the best with the weather and attempt our no-drop ride again this week.   The route will be flat, in town, and a figure 8 configuration so we’ll stop in where we’ve started after the first loop for those who may need to get home earlier.  Please have lights on your bicycle.

Time: 7:00 pm
Location: Cycle Transitions, 739 D’arcy Street, Cobourg (across from the CCC, parking behind the building)
Ride leader:  Maria Garrett

This ride is cancelled. The rain isn’t expected stop till later today.

Sunday June 16th: Ride from Donegan Park

Sunday is Fathers Day, but there are still plenty who want to ride so we’ll meet at Donegan Park at 10:00 and head out along the Waterfront Trail Eastbound toward Colborne and back. No route map is necessary since it’s a “signed” route. This is a nice flat-ish route (code for Easy!) that allows you to turn around at any point you want, making the distance as far as you want to go. The Level 3 group will go shorter and a little slower than the Level 4’s. If you need a refresher on our ride Levels, take a moment to review them here: NHCC Rides (Levels)

Date: Sunday, June 16th 2013
Time: 10:00am
Start Location: Donegan Park
Ride Difficulty: Level 3 or 4
Route Maps: N/A
Ride Leader (Level 4): Mike McLellan
Ride Leader (Level 3): John Howe

We’re still looking for a Level 3 ride leader. It’s not hard to do…..just know where you’re going and be able to keep track of those you are riding with. Any volunteers?

Thursday June 13th: Ride from Donegan Park at 10am

This ride is cancelled due to lack of participation in the requested RAIN DANCE. 🙂

What a great turnout Wednesday night for the All Levels Ride and Wings. You see, when there’s beer involved a lot more people seem to show up! It was great to meet all those fabulous partners and spouses who so generously loan out their significant others to ride their bikes with us so frequently.

Level 3 and Level 4’s: It sounds like rain at the moment, but who knows. We’ll plan anyways cuz anything can happen. The Level 4s rode hard tonight on those hills that seemed to never end so it’s probably wise to cut it back a bit tomorrow morning and ride flat and easy. So, we’re heading out along the Waterfront Trail toward Wicklow (and beyond if you feel up to it). Level 3s can do the same, though it may be a little slower pace.

Start time: 10am
Start location: Donegan Park
Route: Waterfront Trail Eastbound (no map required)
Ride Leaders: Vivian and Anita
