NHCC Summer Cycling Tours, 2015
For the first time ever, the NHCC is offering the opportunity for cycle touring within our club. These tours are intended for both the experienced and those who have never tried it but want to give touring a go. We recognize that some may own a bike but none of the other equipment for touring, such as a specialized touring bike, racks, panniers, tents, and other camping equipment. If this describes you and you want to see if touring is for you, this is your opportunity to try a tour without making an investment in new gear. For the first two tours, we will offer:
- SAG (support and gear) vehicle to carry gear you can’t carry on your bike
- fluids and snacks to riders
- tools for minor repairs
- transportation for a rider and their bike if they have a mechanical issue that can’t be fixed at the side of the road
- or give a lift to anyone who needs a rest
Tours are a go rain or shine. If you have any questions about any of these tours, please contact us at: nhcycling2010@gmail.com
Northumberland Tour: July 3,4,5th
(total distance: 150km)
This three day tour stays within Northumberland County. It involves daily distances of up to 64.5km with hilly terrain. After all, it is Northumberland County and we’re known for hills! Both overnight stops are situated in the country so there is ample room for camping. There is also limited availability of extra beds, couches, and indoor floor space to sleep on for those who reserve in advance. Showers are available at both locations. BYOB (it can travel in the SAG wagon).
Itinerary:
Friday, July 3rd: Start from Randy’s in Cobourg at 2:00. Ride to Maria’s (48km). Dinner, munchies for the campfire are included. Breakfast will be a short ride away in Warkworth and at riders’ own expense.
Saturday, July 4th: After breakfast, Cycle to Ruth and Peter’s west of Perrytown (64.5km). Lunch stop is the choice of each rider and at their expense. Dinner and breakfast Sunday morning provided.
Sunday, July 5th: After breakfast a short-ish ride back to where we started in Cobourg!
Cost: $60 to $70 per person (depending on number of participants. Exact cost will be finalized and announced upon the registration deadline.) Includes dinner Friday & Saturday evenings, breakfast Sunday morning, munchies in the evenings, water, other fluids, and snacks along the way.
Pre-registration is required by Friday, May 29th (no payment required yet). To pre-register please email us at nhcycling2010@gmail.com
Payment Due Date: Friday, June 12th (non refundable)
Presqu’ile Tour: August 8 & 9th
(total distance: 100 km)
This is an easy tour, well-suited for those who prefer shorter, flatter routes or just looking for a fun outing. This tour follows the Waterfront Trail eastbound to Presqu’ile Provincial Park. For those equipped for cammping we’ll stay at the park. Alternatively, the Presqu’ile Beach Motel is 11km away in Brighton and is a cycle friendly business.
We are hoping for a campground bonfire. Motel guests could either opt to ride to Presqu’ile for a visit, or the SAG vehicle may be able to transport them.
Water, fluids, and snacks will be carried by the SAG vehicle. Dinner on Saturday could either be in a Brighton restaurant or pizza can be delivered to the park by the SAG vehicle. Breakfast in Brighton Sunday morning before the ride home.
Detailed Itinerary and Costs are in development and will be announced.
Motel Accommodations:(optional) Participants wishing motel accommodations are responsible for making their own reservation. Reservations for Brighton Beach Motel: 1 877 769 6153 (toll free) or 1 613 475 1010. Post a comment once you have made a reservation so we know you’re coming with us.
Campsites can accommodate up to 4 tents and some motel rooms up to 4 people. It you want to share accommodations, make a comment on this post to find others who want to share. We recommend booking ASAP to avoid disappointment.
Ottawa Tour (proposed), August 21-30th
Details are still in development, but we are planning a possible tour riding to Ottawa and back (possibly taking the train back at least part of the way.) Save the dates if you are interested in our most ambitious tour this summer and watch for details.
Thursday, May 21st: Level 3/4 ride
After the ride, brew, and brouhaha Wednesday evening, we’ll do a nice spin a few hours later – because we love to ride!
Date: Thursday, May 21st
Start Location: arena on Furnace Street, Cobourg
Time: 10:00
Route: to be determined
Ride Coordinator: Maria Siemiaszko
Wednesday May 20: All Levels Ride, Brew & Brouhaha Social
We’ve heard that last year people really enjoyed our once-monthly All Levels Ride and Social (3rd Wednesday each month) so we will continue this season. After this ALL LEVELS RIDE we’ll head into The Mill where we’ve reserved some space for those who wish to order up some beer and munchies and just meet up with others. An All Levels Ride means that there’s just one route and everyone rides—but at their respective paces, Levels 1-4.
This “out and back” route is a time to try the next level up if you want to check it out. For instance, if you are Level 3 but want to try Level 4, then head out with the Level 4 group. Everyone rides for 45 minutes then turns around and come back along the same route as all the other levels. Everyone finishes at the same time. If you can’t keep up with the group you started with don’t sweat it, just drop back and wait for the group behind to catch up.
Time: 6:30–8:00pm (ride) 8:00-9:30pm (social)
Start location: The Mill parking lot
Route map: 36km printable route map here, or view it on Ride with GPS
Ride leaders: Level 1: Maria Siemiazsko, Level 2: Mike McLellan, Level 3: Anita Macklin, Level 4: TBD
Important: It’s a popular event! Please RSVP so that we can ensure an adequate reservation for space at The Mill.
Sunday, May 17th, Level 1 ride (ice cream run)
The first long weekend of the summer season is here and the weather is supposed to be nice, so those are good reasons to go for an ice cream run! Bring a few dollars for your treat.
Date: Sunday, May 17th
Time: 2:00
Meeting Location: parking lot at Cycle Transitions, 739 D’Arcy St, Cobourg, across from the CCC. The parking lot is on the west side of the building.
Ride Leader: Maria Siemiaszko
Friday, May 15th: Level 2 ride
I’m looking to do a little ride on my way home from work Friday afternoon, so if anyone would like to join me, we can do a slight variation of Wednesday’s ride. It’ll be the Cornish Hollow loop but with a little detour added at Rose Street for a few more kilometers (no map attached)
Date: Friday, May 15th
Start Location: the arena on Furnace Street
Time: 1:30
Ride Leader: Maria Siemiaszko
Please advise if you are thinking of coming. If I don’t think anyone is I will most likely do a different loop on my way home instead.
Saturday May 16, L3(-), 33 km – St. Annes and Back
This ride will start out at the industrial park on Willmott Street and then head east on highway 2. We will make our way up to the Danforth/Massey Rd. which we will follow all the way to St. Anne’s Spa. We will follow the Waterfront Trail to get back to Cobourg. There is a long hill that we will need to climb to get to St. Anne’s but the view from there makes it all worth it.

Start location: Industrial park on Willmott Street
Route Map: View the link on Ride with GPS

Thursday, May 14th: Level 3/4 ride
This week we’ll be riding a route Brian Hedney designed for the NHCC a few years ago. The “Western Wanderer” starts at the Gilmers Home Hardware parking lot in order to avoid climbing out of Port Hope. By the way, for those who aren’t sure how it works, the format of the Level 3 and 4 rides are such that we do the same ride on both Thursday and then again on Sunday morning.
Date: Thursday, May 14th
Time: 10:00am
Level of Difficulty: Level 3 or Level 4 (Click here to review the expectations)
Route Map: Printable route map here
Start Location:Gilmers Home Hardware parking lot in Port Hope under the big sign.

Bring your membership card or completed membership/guest rider form and payment.
Leaving a comment: Why do we ask you to do this? Sometimes people are apprehensive about coming out for a ride because they believe there won’t be anyone to ride with at their pace. Leaving a comment to indicate that you’ll be joining us and what level you plan to ride helps reassure others and allows them to plan ahead.
Sunday May 17th: Level 3 & 4 Ride from Port Hope
This Sunday we do the same route as the Thursday ride–the “Western Wanderer”, starting at Gilmers Home Hardware parking lot in Port Hope. In case you are wondering, the Sunday morning rides are usually a repeat of the previous Thursdays ride. That way, if you were working or otherwise pre-disposed, you won’t miss out.
Date: Sunday, May 17th
Time: 10:00am
Level of Difficulty: Level 3 or Level 4 (Click here to review the expectations)
Route Map: Printable route map here
Start Location: Gilmers Home Hardware parking lot in Port Hope (near the big Gilmers sign)

You planning to ride? Leave us a comment Naturally you’d like to know that there will be others to ride with at your pace. Leaving a comment indicating your intent to ride really helps others out. A simple I plan to ride. Hoping to do Level 3 for the first time and not sure I’ll be able to keep up. helps others who might be in the same boat and they might just respond with their intent to ride alongside you! Or, if you want to ride at lightning speed, there may be others willing to try and keep up!
Correction for Thursdays ride
Correction: The start point for Thursdays ride was incorrect. The correct start location is Gilmers Home Hardware parking lot in Port Hope near the big Gilmers sign.
