ALL THE WHEELY FUN CLUB NEWS!

Thursday May 17, Ride from Bewdley (25, 49 or 96km)

We’ve got three distances to choose from. The 49km regular route starts in Bewdley at and there’s an option to shorten the ride to 25km if you prefer to ride at a more “scenic” pace. There’s also an extended option**, adding distance both before and after the regular route. Take a look at the descriptions below so you can anticipate in advance which group you might want to ride with.

The Scenic Group:
If you like to take your time, riding slower and taking in the scenery, the 25km route is recommended for you. This group will ride together, making sure to not leave anyone behind. We would appreciate a volunteer to lead this ride! Please comment below if you’re on board.

Regular Group:
The 49km route is for those of you who want to ride a little longer. There may be occasional stops to re-group, and you’ll see some of the best scenery around. There’s an opportunity to re-load drinks and grab some snacks at the Harwood Store.

The Non-Stoppers
Need we say more? The non-stoppers may ride 49 (or 96km), and will likely be moving it along at a rapid pace. If you wish to try riding in this group, by all means do so….there’s the nice safety net of being able to fall back to the Regular Group if they leave you in the dust!

Start time: 10:00am
Start location: Bewdley Arena
Route Map: “The Scenic Route” (35, 48, or 94km options)  route map here

**Extended option (96km)
Start at The Mill Restaurant at 8:45. That will give you 75 minutes to ride the 23 km required to reach the start point in Bewdley. And of course you’ll need to ride back again afterward.  🙂

Please reply below and mention which group you might choose to ride with.

EASY RIDE: Wednesday May 16, Donegan Park 7:00pm

The Monday ride was a lot of fun. More than 15 people came out and rode 20km. For some it was a “recovery ride” after riding really hard the previous day, and for others it was their first time out this year. In any case, the leisurely scenic pace of the ride allowed for lots of conversation and as always, our Monday/Wednesday evening rides are guaranteed slow and nobody ever gets left behind. We’ll do another one this Wednesday.

Ride Slow if you Want to Ride Fast
There’s a place in everyone’s training and exercise programs for some easy riding. If you don’t believe it, take a look at this article describing the benefits and the art of riding slow and how riding slow can make you ride faster http://bicycling.com/blogs/roadscholar/2012/04/05/the-art-of-riding-slow/.

10th Annual Ride of Silence: Wednesday Evening (Oshawa)

Join cyclists worldwide in a silent slow-paced ride in honor of those who have been injured or killed while cycling on public roadways.

THE RIDE OF SILENCE WILL NOT BE QUIET
On May 16, 2012 at 7:00 PM, the Ride of Silence will begin in North America and roll across the globe. The event will take place in Oshawa at 7:00pm on Wednesday evening. Cyclists will take to the roads in a silent procession to honor cyclists who have been killed or injured while cycling on public roadways.

The Ride of Silence is a free ride that asks its cyclists to ride no faster than 12 mph, wear helmets, follow the rules of the road and remain silent during the ride. There are no sponsors and no registration fees. The ride, which is held during National Bike Month, aims to raise the awareness of motorists, police and city officials that cyclists have a legal right to the public roadways. The ride is also a chance to show respect for and honor the lives of those who have been killed or injured.
Distance: 10 KM
Location: Meet at The Oshawa Civic Recreation Complex North End Parking Lot (Unpaved one next to Trent U)
Time: 6:30 p.m.

Ride: Sunday May 13: Donegan Park: (10am)

This Sunday we ride out along the Waterfront Trail as far as we want again, then turn around and come back. It’s nice easy riding, and doesn’t get much flatter than this around these parts. 37km—you’ll be done in no time! Feel free to extend the ride longer if you wish.

We will try the same 3-group approach as last Sunday: Scenic/Leisurely Group, the Regular Group, and the Non-stop Group.

Please print out the route map and bring it with you if you are planning to ride.

Start time: 10:00am
Start location: Donegan Park

Ride: Thursday May 10: Donegan Park: (10am)

This Thursday is simple. The planned route is about 37km, but that doesn’t mean you are obligated nor limited. We ride out along the Waterfront Trail as far as we want, then turn around and come back. How simple is that? And it’s easy riding! No real hills to speak of. You make the ride as long or short as you want.

Please print out the route map and bring it with you if you are planning to ride.

Start time: 10:00am
Start location: Donegan Park
Route map and directions: Wicklow Beach and Back route map

Please comment below if you are coming, and also what sort of distance you might be thinking of. It helps others to plan ahead, especially if you’re looking to go all the way to Presqu’ile Park and back.

Just sayin……

EASY RIDE: Wednesday May 9, Donegan Park 7:00pm

We took the chance on Monday night and didn’t get rained out, so we’ll take the chance again. Nothing to strenuous, nothing to long…..this ride is a casual ride for riders of all ability. As usual with our Easy Rides, we will travel along as a group, share some yakkity yak and have fun. All weather dependent of course.—the weather sounds a little sketchy at the moment. Keep your eye on the radar. If there’s a 40% chance of rain, that means there’s a 60% chance it won’t rain! How’s that for optimism?
