July 1st, Canada Day Ride and Picnic (50k or 33k)

A reminder about the July 1st Canada Day Ride that is just two days away! Barb & John are hosting the ride and picnic/potluck afterwards. As in typical Ganaraska Freewheelers tradition, riders usually your own plates, utensils, libations, and a dish to share. It promises to be a lot of fun. Spouses, partners welcome. Click here for more information, and to leave comments.

Announcing a new area of our website: CONNECT-A-RIDE

Okay, it seems as though we love to meet on Sundays for our group ride. But there may be other times during the week when you may want to find another like-minded person to head out on a ride with. This new section called CONNECT-A-RIDE could be a helpful place to connect with others who are available to ride outside of our regular Sunday rides. CONNECT-A-RIDE You can also access this section by clicking on the link in the main navigation menu up above.

Sunday June 27th Ride

It’s unknown how many people are available to ride this coming Sunday, June 27th. We’ll open the topic for discussion here, and see if there’s interest in forming a ride this week. Anyone want to suggest a route, starting point, etc.?

Sunday, July 4th Ride (possibly from Grafton)

Brian Hedney has made the following suggestion for Sunday, July 4th.

“How do folks feel about having a ride from Grafton on Sunday July 4th? We would, of course, have to wear red, white and blue outfits with lots of stars and stripes on them! The route that I am proposing is 51 km long, and is called Grafton East. It is to be found here: The Grafton-East Map. It is, in my opinion, a lovely route. It starts by following the (relatively flat) Waterfront Trail to Colborne, then heads north into the hills of Telephone Road before coming down the lovely Shelter Valley Road. The starting point is the Grafton Arena, 500 m west of the village on C.R.2.”

Canada Day Bike Ride & Pot Luck

John and Barb who ride with the Ganaraska Freewheelers are sponsoring a ride on Canada Day this year. They have kindly extended an invitation to the Northumberland Hills Cycling Community to join them in celebrating Canada Day with a bike ride and picnic/pot luck afternoon.

The ride starts at 10:00 am and will be the East Danforth route, 50k or 33k, beginning and ending at the home of Barb and John. A pot luck lunch/whatever will follow the ride.

Please RSVP to let us know you are interested. (CLICK HERE). A detailed invitation will be forwarded to you with a link for the route map and directions to Barb and John’s house.

Sunday June 20th Ride (Fathers Day) (50k flat, from Port Hope?)

This coming sunday is Father’s Day. There was some talk after the last ride about going for a distance of about 40-50k this coming Sunday but it’s unclear whether or not many people are able to make it.

In the words of Brian Hedney: “I was thinking that we might wish to consider a 50 km, relatively flat, 50 km ride from Port Hope next Sunday. If we were to start at Gilmer’s Home Hardware, on Toronto Road, we would avoid the climb out of downtown. I could easily put together a relatively flat 50 km route for such a ride. What do you think about the notion of starting in Port Hope? There is a Tim Hortons there with a washroom :)”

Let’s all weigh in with our thoughts about starting in Port Hope. Does a different starting point prevent anybody from joining us? (like transporting bicycles etc.?) If so, perhaps a few generous souls with bicycle carrying capacity might offer assistance, if required?

If a Port Hope start point is too complicated for people, we can stick to Donegan Park.

Potential 74k ride this Sunday June 6th

Stay tuned for details about a possible 74k ride this coming Sunday (weather permitting, as always) with a lunch stop at the restaurant in Harwood that is across the street from the Harwood store. The route and restaurant facilities have yet to be confirmed, but if you’d like to take a look at the map and start thinking ahead, here is the link. 74k Rice Lake Ramble Map with lunch break in Harwood.

If anyone prefers less distance, please comment below and perhaps we can form a shorter length group that would certainly be welcome to participate for a portion of the ride.

If you think you are going to join in for lunch, please make mention of it below so that we can give advance notice to the restaurant.

Sunday May 30th Ride

A pleasant 45K ride with seven riders consisting of Vivian and Harold, Winston, Barb, Anita and Randy and our newest rider Glen.
From Donegan park up Ontario west along Danforth up Williamson and along Jibb to Doyle to Alberts Lane Down 18 and along Smiley to Cornish Hollow to Ball to Rose down Racetrack south on Harwood up Gully east on Community Centre Road to Payne, Van Luven and Nagle into town via Greer and Workman and Along the lake back to the park.

A great ride with great folks, hot and sunny lots of great smooth pavement!

Next week we are considering a longer ride, perhaps around 70K with a lunch break.
A shorter option will also be planned.

Stay tuned!

Sunday, May 23

Bill, Winston, Klaus, Anita, Randy

We were a little skeptical about the weather when we started out at 10:00, but the cloudiness gave way to sunshine and it turned out to be a fabulous day for a ride. 50km of sunshine, lilacs trees, beautiful green pastures, Mama and baby horses, Lake Ontario, and a whole bunch of Toronto Bike Network cyclists heading in the opposite direction.

Klaus, Randy, Bill, Winston and Anita all took in the ride today. Good conversation and a nice comfortable pace made for a great day all around. Comments, anyone?
