ALL THE WHEELY FUN CLUB NEWS!
Monday June 23, 2014: Level 1 ride at 6:30pm
We have a different start location tonight. We’ll meet in the parking lot behind Cycle Transitions and depart from there. Level 1 rides are a lot of fun, and most of all they are very safe for the participants as we ride in a group and nobody gets dropped. It’s a great ride where you can ask all those questions about cycling, routes, gearing, and just about anything you’ve always wondered about regarding cycling. And it’s not just for beginners—it’s an opportunity to pay-it-forward, as experienced riders are encouraged to support and assist new riders.
Start time: 6:30pm
Start location: parking lot behind Cycle Transitions
Ride Leader: Maria Garrett
Thursday June 19th: “To Harwood and Beyond” 63k ride (or 55k)
This ride takes some familiar roads up toward Harwood, but upon departing Harwood we take a little detour along Rice Lake Scenic Drive and Lilac Valley Rd. If you want to chop off 8k and make it just 55k you can just head straight down Harwood Road after re-loading your water bottle as we all like to do in Harwood.
Start time: 10:00am
Start location: The arena on Furnace St.
Route Map: “To Harwood and Beyond” 63k printable route map here
Level of difficulty: Levels 3 and 4
As usual, the Level 3 group is expected to ride together as a group (without a ride leader) and Level 4 may go faster and break off into smaller groups according to ability (again, without a ride leader).
So how ’bout it? Leave us a comment, tell us you are riding. 🙂
Sunday June 22: The NHCC Sharon Ingle Memorial Ride
This Sunday is a little different. To honour an NHCC club member who lost her fight to cancer at the end of last year’s riding season, we are holding a ride to honour Sharon Ingle who was with us for a brief time but left a significant impact on those who knew her.
Last year at this time Sharon sought support from the NHCC as she was still “Riding to Survive”, never planning to give up.
Donations: We are asking all who wish to participate in the ride on Sunday to make a voluntary donation that will be forwarded to the Canadian Cancer Society. We will have forms available for those who wish a tax receipt from the Cancer Society. (Please make cheques payable to the Canadian Cancer Society, not the NHCC).
The route: will be a simple out-and-back along the Waterfront Trail Eastbound so there are no route maps or ride leaders needed. We will break into groups according to ability and everyone can ride as long (or short) as desired.
Start time: 10:00am
Start location: Donegan Park
Please leave a comment letting others know approximately what level of difficulty you wish to ride at (Levels 1 – 4). That way, others can plan to ride with you!
Reminder of the Cycling Safety Class tonight
For the participants of the Cycling Safety Course, a quick reminder of the class tonight at 6:30pm. We are covering Rural Cycling and Bike Handling Skills III. Please remember to bring your bicycles.
Sunday June 15: Ride from Port Hope
This ride goes out into Hope Township. Since Hwy. 2 has construction, we will meet at the parking lot at Port Hope Town Hall and take off from there. There are two distances to choose from: 46k or 62k. In either case, it’s going to be a little hilly….just can’t be helped! Level 3’s ride at a slower pace, shorter distance, and stay together in a group. Level 4’s ride faster, longer and may break off into smaller groups according to ability.
If you are really wanting to leave the car at home and bike over from Cobourg, meet at the Park on Carlisle at 9:30. You might however, have a little wait at the construction site. If you choose to meet here, leave a comment to let others know.
Start time: 10:00am
Start location: Port Hope Town Hall
Route map (Level 3): Printable 46k route map, or link to Ride with GPS
Route map (Level 4): Printable 62k route map, or link to Ride with GPS
Whatever you are planning to ride, please leave a comment and let others know. People really appreciate knowing there might be others riding at their pace.

Monday June 16th: Level 1 Ride
We going to meet in the parking lot behind the Dutch Oven and head out for our fabulously fun, most incredibly exciting Level 1 ride. 🙂 For those who have never come out for a Monday night ride, why not give it a try? You’ll truly see where the “fun” and “friendship” portion of our NHCC motto comes from.
Start time: 6:30pm
Start location: parking lot behind the Dutch Oven
Ride Leader: Maria Garrett
Wednesday June 18th: NHCC Club “Welcome” Social
This coming Wednesday will be a little different. It’s the NHCC “Welcome” Social where we welcome all club members to our 2014 riding season. It’s an All Levels ride night. That means everyone heads out for their respective rides (about an hour long) and afterward we get to mix and mingle together at the Pavillion in Victoria Park where the NHCC will be providing sandwiches, snacks, etc. for all club members. If you are riding your bike home afterward, please ensure you have lights on your bike! If you can’t make it out for the ride portion you are more than welcome to come to the Social anyways…..just let us know you are coming!
Inclement weather plan: If the ride portion is rained out, the Social at the pavillion takes place, rain or shine, starting at 6:30pm.
Start location: The parking lot behind the Dutch Oven
Start time (Ride): 6:30pm
Start time (Social): 7:30
Route maps: (coming soon)
RSVP: It’s important that we know how many members are attending so we can ensure enough food for everyone. Please leave a comment to say you are coming if you plan to attend.
Call for participants: 100km Charity Bike Ride Event: August 23rd
There is something for everyone–a swim, a walk or a bike ride. That’s where we come in! To raise funds for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy research, Jesse’s Journey is organizing a 100k bike ride around Rice Lake for Saturday August 23rd. It’s an important event for fellow club member Sharon Lynn Weese whose 16-year old nephew Tyler Lynn suffers from this disease. Sharon is hoping that we can get as much participation as possible and raise both funds and awareness.
About Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy
Duchenne MD is a fatal disease that only affects boys, symptoms usually appearing before age 6. Those affected are typically wheelchair-bound by age 10-12. Life expectancy is approximately 25 years and there is no cure. A club member, Sharon Lynn-Weese’s 15-year old nephew Tyler Lynn has Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. Sharon will be participating in the 100k Ride and her nephew in the 6k Walk portion in his wheelchair.
For more information, or to Register to participate, visit Brian Connor’s Rice Lake Challenge While no entry fee is required, a minimum of $100 funds raised per participant would be greatly appreciated.
