ALL THE WHEELY FUN CLUB NEWS!

Wednesday June 4th: Port Hope Ride

We will meet and go out for a 30km (give or take a little) and we won’t go too fast, or tackle too many crazy hills. We modify the ride somewhat to suit the ability of the riders who participate. If you want to skip the uphill at the start of the ride, meet at the top of town just at the corner of Toronto Rd. and Ridout near the Winchester Arms parking lot. Your ride will be a little shorter, but you will miss that hill! Otherwise, the start location remains the Town Hall.

Start time: 6:30pm
Start location: Port Hope Town Hall
Route: approximately 30km
Level of difficulty: varies according to participation
Ride Leader: Pamela Tate

If you are planning to participate in the Port Hope ride, please use the comment feature to let Pam know you are coming. It helps her to plan routes and speed!

Wed. June 4th: Level 2 ride, 20km

This ride starts at the industrial park on Willmott Street and then we will head east on Highway #2.  There are few hills in this ride but we are going to take it sloooooow and learn some strategies to get up those hills. The scenery outside of town makes the climb worth it.

Next week we will do this ride in reverse (same elevation longer climbs) and for those that are a little more adventurous I will add an optional hill climb (Hill 60).

Start time: 6:30pm
Start location: Parking lot industrial park east end. Willmott and Dodge streets.
Route Map:Printable route map with elevations
Difficulty: Level 2 (+ a smidgen)
Ride Leader: Mike Mclellan

Monday June 2nd: “Casual Cruise” Level 1 Ride

The regular NHCC Level 1 ride still takes place on Monday night (weather dependent of course), but because it’s Bike Week we are doing things a little differently. We are opening up the Monday night ride to members of the public who may wish to join us for a fun, easy, family-oriented ride ride at a casual pace, hence the term “Casual Cruise” ride. This ride starts at the Bandshell in Victoria park.

Members of the public will be allowed to ride with us, free of charge, but they will be required to sign a guest waiver and wear a helmet.

Date: Monday, June 2, 2014
Time: 6:30pm
Start location: The Bandshell in Victoria Park, Cobourg

See you all there!

All Level Ride, Lang Hastings Trail, Saturday June 14th

Lang Hastings TrailFor something a little different we’re riding on the Lang Hastings Trail, a former rail line that has a new life as a crushed limestone multipurpose trail. The ride will start and end at Jim and Sue’s home in Hastings. Road bikes can manage the trail but it’s easier on a hybrid or mountain bike. The first three kilometers from Jim and Sue’s will be the roughest. Since we come back the same way we head out, there isn’t a map and everyone can ride out as far and fast or slow as they wish.

Jim and Sue have generously offered to fire up the BBQ and cook up some burgers (meat and veggie) after we return so please indicate if you wish to partake and if you want the veggie option. Bring your beverage of choice and a lawn chair. Plenty of parking is available.

Time: 10:00 am
Meeting Place: Jim Paré and Sue Léger’s place, Hastings
RSVP: This event requires an RSVP so that Jim and Sue can prepare. When you email us to say you are coming, we’ll let you know their address.

Sunday June 1st: Ride at 2:00pm

Cobourg Bike WeekIt’s Bike Week starting tomorrow, and Bike for the Planet takes place downtown Cobourg in the morning. The NHCC will have an information booth set up and plenty of folks will be volunteering their time. Others are volunteering at the ParaSports games, so it’s a very busy day! Because so many are fulfilling volunteer commitments in the morning, we are moving our regular Sunday ride to 2:00 in the afternoon so that they don’t miss out. It’s going to be like summer! Warm, sunny, and superb!

All riders should have a route map. Level 3s ride together in a group, Level 4s may separate into groups according to ability.

Start time: 2:00pm
Start location: The Arena on Furnace St. in Cobourg

Thurs. May 29: “Uphill & Downhill” Choose from three routes

Overall not so bad tomorrow. 21° and at least there’s no rain. Regardless of what distance you choose, it’s gonna be mostly uphill for the first half and downhill for the second. The three routes share the same first part and then re-join each other again for the last part. It’s difference happens in the middle:

36km riders turn right at 17k onto Speechly, everyone else goes left.
56km riders turn right at 26km onto Broomfield, 69km riders continue straight.

As is the expectation for all level 3 and 4 rides, bring a route map with you. Level 3s will stay together in a group, Level 4s will break off into different speeds according to ability.

Start time: 10:00am
Start location: The Arena on Furnace St. in Cobourg

Wedesday Port Hope Ride: May 28th

This time we’ll depart from the parking lot of the Winchester Arms again and head out for a relatively easy ride, about 25 or 30km – no one will be left behind! The 40% chance of showers leaves a 60% chance that it won’t rain on us!
Start time: 6:30pm
Start location: Parking lot of Winchester Arms in Port Hope
Ride Leader: Pamela Tate

Level 2 Wed. May 28 “Baltimore and Back”
