Wednesday May 20: All Levels Ride, Brew & Brouhaha Social

We’ve heard that last year people really enjoyed our once-monthly All Levels Ride and Social (3rd Wednesday each month) so we will continue this season. After this ALL LEVELS RIDE we’ll head into The Mill where we’ve reserved some space for those who wish to order up some beer and munchies and just meet up with others. An All Levels Ride means that there’s just one route and everyone rides—but at their respective paces, Levels 1-4.

This “out and back” route is a time to try the next level up if you want to check it out. For instance, if you are Level 3 but want to try Level 4, then head out with the Level 4 group. Everyone rides for 45 minutes then turns around and come back along the same route as all the other levels. Everyone finishes at the same time. If you can’t keep up with the group you started with don’t sweat it, just drop back and wait for the group behind to catch up.

Time: 6:30–8:00pm (ride) 8:00-9:30pm (social)
Start location: The Mill parking lot
Route map: 36km printable route map here, or view it on Ride with GPS
Ride leaders: Level 1: Maria Siemiazsko, Level 2: Mike McLellan, Level 3: Anita Macklin, Level 4: TBD

Important: It’s a popular event! Please RSVP so that we can ensure an adequate reservation for space at The Mill.

Friday, May 15th: Level 2 ride

I’m looking to do a little ride on my way home from work Friday afternoon, so if anyone would like to join me, we can do a slight variation of Wednesday’s ride. It’ll be the Cornish Hollow loop but with a little detour added at Rose Street for a few more kilometers (no map attached)

Thursday, May 14th: Level 3/4 ride

This week we’ll be riding a route Brian Hedney designed for the NHCC a few years ago. The “Western Wanderer” starts at the Gilmers Home Hardware parking lot in order to avoid climbing out of Port Hope. By the way, for those who aren’t sure how it works, the format of the Level 3 and 4 rides are such that we do the same ride on both Thursday and then again on Sunday morning.

Date: Thursday, May 14th
Time: 10:00am
Level of Difficulty: Level 3 or Level 4 (Click here to review the expectations)
Route Map: Printable route map here
Start Location:Gilmers Home Hardware parking lot in Port Hope under the big sign.
Ride Coordinator: Anita Macklin
Bring your membership card or completed membership/guest rider form and payment.

Leaving a comment: Why do we ask you to do this? Sometimes people are apprehensive about coming out for a ride because they believe there won’t be anyone to ride with at their pace. Leaving a comment to indicate that you’ll be joining us and what level you plan to ride helps reassure others and allows them to plan ahead.

Sunday May 17th: Level 3 & 4 Ride from Port Hope

This Sunday we do the same route as the Thursday ride–the “Western Wanderer”, starting at Gilmers Home Hardware parking lot in Port Hope. In case you are wondering, the Sunday morning rides are usually a repeat of the previous Thursdays ride. That way, if you were working or otherwise pre-disposed, you won’t miss out.

Date: Sunday, May 17th
Time: 10:00am
Level of Difficulty: Level 3 or Level 4 (Click here to review the expectations)
Route Map: Printable route map here
Start Location: Gilmers Home Hardware parking lot in Port Hope (near the big Gilmers sign)
Ride Coordinator: Maria Siemiaszko

You planning to ride? Leave us a comment Naturally you’d like to know that there will be others to ride with at your pace. Leaving a comment indicating your intent to ride really helps others out. A simple I plan to ride. Hoping to do Level 3 for the first time and not sure I’ll be able to keep up. helps others who might be in the same boat and they might just respond with their intent to ride alongside you! Or, if you want to ride at lightning speed, there may be others willing to try and keep up!

The NHCC Cycling Safety Course starts Tues. May 19th

The NHCC will be offering a 5-evening (10 hours total) comprehensive Cycling Skills and Safety course to both members and non-members. This course has been adapted from the standard Canadian Cycling Association’s Can-Bike2 safe cycling program with some customization to meet the needs of our Club. You will learn to ride defensively, and develop a set of skills and attitudes suitable for riding both individually and in a group, including:

  • good traffic judgement and anticipation
  • assertiveness in traffic
  • knowledge of the rules of the road
  • understanding potential hazards
  • communication techniques
  • collision avoidance techniques
  • group riding dynamics and etiquette

The certified Can-Bike instructors delivering the course are confident that even the most experienced cyclist will learn something new and be challenged by the bike handling skills we cover.

Can-Bike 2 Certification (optional):
CanBike2 certification is a pre-requisite if any person wishes to become a Can-Bike instructor at some point in the future. If any participants wish to receive an official CanBike2 certification upon completion of the course, please advise us when you register so that we can arrange to have appropriate training materials and exam on hand for you.
