“Special Event” Rides for September

For those who like to plan ahead, these are non-NHCC rides, but are special cycling events taking place in our area and may be of interest to our NHCC membership.

Registration includes an event jersey and lunch. Go for four days and the SAG truck will transport your luggage. (Registration: $100 for single day ride, $200 for entire four-day ride)

Kawarthas Northumberland Classic: September 22, 2013: A single-day cycling event benefitting the United Way. Ride the 30km route either once, twice or three times. BBQ afterward. (Registration: $43)

Friday August 9th: Inter-club Ride and Potluck (Levels 1-4)

There will be no Thursday EVENING ride option this week. Instead, there will be an inter-club combined NHCC and Ganaraska Freewheelers ride followed by a potluck at Randy’s home (Your NHCC president) on Friday Evening. We meet at his house, head out for a ride (distances between 14 and 47k), and then upon return we’ll eat and socialize. All levels of riders are welcome and there will be suitable distances to choose from for all levels.

For the Potluck: In keeping with traditional Freewheelers fashion, please bring a dish to share (including serving utensils), your own plate & flatware, and preferred beverage.
Start time: 5:30pm
Start location: Randy’s house

Lights required on bikes at: 8:00pm (Sunset at 8:30)

IMPORTANT: Please RSVP by commenting below if you are coming so that Randy can anticipate numbers. We don’t want to publish his address on the Big Web so if you need his address please send us a quick email and we’ll fire it off to you.

Monday Aug. 5th: Level 1 Ride

Although it’s a holiday, we’ll still head out for a Level 1 ride. We’ll just cruise around town, taking it easy and enjoying the summer evening.

Start time: 7:00pm
Start location: The park on Carlisle St. between Ewing and Westwood
Ride Leader: Anita Macklin

Thursday Aug. 1st EVENING Ride option 6:30pm (42k)

In case you can’t make it to the morning ride, there’s the Evening option but with just one start time and location. The only difference between the Level 3 and 4 will be pace, so choose accordingly. The days are definitely getting shorter so it’s essential you now have lights on your bikes for evening rides. The law requires them starting 30 minutes prior to Sunset which is why we have that handy link over in the right hand column of the website and why post the time of Sunset for longer evening rides.

Start Time:6:30pm sharp
Start Location: The cemetery at Precious Corners (park along side of road)
Route Map: Printable Route map with elevation chart or, if you are equipped with a GPS View the link on Ride with GPS
Lights Required at: 8:05pm (Sunset: 8:35pm)

The Thursday Evening Ride doesn’t provide a ride leader. Taking part in the Thursday evening ride option requires that all riders be equipped with a map, tools for replacing a flat tire should you find yourself in such an unfortunate circumstance and make an effort to ensure that you have someone to ride with. (The Buddy System!) Use the commenting section to let others know you are riding.

Thursday, August 1st: Ride from Precious Corners

The forecast shows rain, but if we keep our fingers crossed that might change and if it does, here’s the plan:

Start Time (Level 3):9:00am sharp
Start Location (Level 3): The cemetery at Precious Corners (park along side of road)

Start Time (Level 4): 8:40am
Start Location (Level 4): The arena on Furnace St.

Route Map: Printable Route map with elevation chart or, if you are equipped with a GPS View the link on Ride with GPS

LOST: On Saturday July 27th, a Garmin605 was lost by a cyclist while in Cobourg. It was lost either at or near a parking lot downtown. If anyone knows any information about it, please contact Sarto at 905-261-6123.

Tuesday July 30th: Evening ride from Port Hope at 6:30pm

It’s warm, breezy and just perfect for an evening ride. If you are riding over to Port Hope from Cobourg, meet at Canadian Tire at 6:10 and then bike over to the Town Hall for 6:30.

Start time: 6:30pm
Start location: Port Hope Town Hall
Ride Leader: George Hussey
Lights required: 8:08pm (Sunset is 8:38pm)

Monday Night Level 1 Ride

If the rain stays away, we’ll meet at the west side of the Furnace Street Arena for a casual ride around town.  Since it’s a little cool, we won’t make this one an ice cream ride, but bring a drink for hydration and don’t forget your bike lights.

Time: 7:00pm
Location:  Furnace Street Arena, west side
Ride Leader: Maria Garrett

Sunday July 28: “Cold Springs Canter” ride from Port Hope

This is another of Brian Hedney’s famous and fabulous routes. The “Cold Springs Canter” has a couple of distance options to choose from and if you want to make it longer you can start at Canadian Tire in Cobourg and bike over to Port Hope making the total distance 65k.

Start time: 9:00am (8:40 if you are riding from Canadian Tire)
Start location: Port Hope Town Hall
Route map: Printable route map here

See you all then!
