ALL THE WHEELY FUN CLUB NEWS!

Wednesday January 17: Evening Hike in Cobourg

This week our hike leader Colin will figure out a route in the west end, including the west boardwalk, Peace Park, Monk’s Cove and residential streets in Burnham-Westwood area. Note the later start time of 6:30pm. At the moment it’s looking like seasonally reasonable temperatures and possibly some snow, so it’ll be a nice night to explore! Optional après-hike social to be determined, so bring along a little extra moolah if you wish.

Start time: 6:30pm
Meeting location: parking lot behind Dutch Oven
Hike Leader: Colin Banfield

Tuesday, January 16th: Morning Hike

We will meet at the regular time of 9:30 am behind Craft Food House and proceed east along the Waterfront Trail. The route back will depend on conditions. The distance will be 6 to 7 km. Coffee and conversation afterwards at Craft.

Start Time: 9:30
Meeting Location: parking lot behind Craft Food House
Distance: 6 to 7 km
Hike Leader: Bruce Bellaire

Weekend Cross Country Skiing: January 13 and 14th

There is plenty of snow in the forest and it sounds like there may be more on the way so we’re planning on some weekend skiing. If the roads are dicey Saturday we may need to cancel but since we don’t meet until early afternoon we can evaluate the conditions and give some time for the road crews to get out so watch this post to see if there is a change in plans.

If anyone out there has just received skis for the first time, has not been out in a long while, or would prefer a relaxed speed and a shorter distance, Anita has offered to accompany such a group if there is a call for it on Saturday’s ski. Think of it as a Level 1 ski! Please let us know in advance if you think you would like to take her up on it so we can plan accordingly. Also, if skiers are interested in carpooling, start the conversation in the comments section.

Date: Saturday, January 13th
Start Time: 1:00
Meeting Location: parking lot at Beagle Club
Ski Leader (Level 1): Anita Mackin
Ski Leader (everyone else): Maria Siemiaszko

Date: Sunday, January, 14th
Start Time: 1:00
Meeting Location: parking lot at Beagle Club
Ski Leader: Maria Siemiaszko

Guests are welcome, just bring along a signed waiver for our insurance purposes!

Thursday, January 11th: morning cross country ski (hopefully!)

If it’s not raining (and fingers crossed that it won’t be) a cross country ski is in order! Right now it looks like the morning may be more favourable but if it turns out the afternoon looks more promising we can change that. Because of this, please comment whether you are interested and either click to receive other comments for this post or keep checking in to see what the final decision will be.

Time: 10:00 (but this may be adjusted according to the weather)
Meeting Location: parking lot at Beagle Club
Ski Organizer: Maria Siemiaszko

Wednesday January 10: Evening Hike, Cobourg

We had a fantastic turnout again last week and we trekked through blowing snow and cold weather. We expect much warmer this week with a high of 0°c. We are planning for January hikes to start from Cobourg and then switch back to Port Hope for February.

If you haven’t joined us on an evening hike yet, come on out! It’s open to everyone, members and non-members so bring a friend. If your 2017 membership has expired and/or you don’t have a 2018 membership (non-members), please bring a signed non-cycling waiver. It’s totally free, but we need it for administrative reasons.

If you are wondering about how difficult these hikes are, we usually cover about 6-9km, at a relatively brisk pace but not super crazy. It’s an “urban hike” so mostly on sidewalks. We often go into a local establishment afterward for a drink of some sort so don’t forget to throw a little $$ in your pocket.

Start time: 6:00pm
Meeting Location: Parking lot behind the Dutch Oven, Cobourg
Hike Leader: Jim Berg

Tuesday, January 9th: morning hike

Paul will lead the first Tuesday morning hike of the year which will be a loop of the east end of Cobourg. Warm up with some coffee and socializing afterwards at Craft. If you haven’t yet rejoined the NHCC for 2018 or are bringing a guest, don’t forget to bring a signed guest waiver.

Start Time: 9:30
Meeting Location: parking lot behind Craft Food House
Hike Leader: Paul Mills

Saturday, January 6th: Afternoon Cross Country Ski

It’ll be a chilly one but we’ve already done some skiing in the super cold weather and stayed warm so layer up! The Lakefield Speed Skating Oval is hoping to open this weekend so maybe we can meet out there Sunday. You can use your own skates or rent speed skates there.

Time: 1:00
Meeting Location: Beagle Club parking lot
Ski Organizer: Maria Siemiaszko

Wednesday Night Hike: January 3rd

It’s a new year! And this Wednesday night is the first evening hike and this time we are starting and finishing in Cobourg for a change. Anyone is welcome, and that means non-members too. If you haven’t hiked with us before, it’s a perfect time to come out and try since we love it when new people show up! We typically walk about 6-8 km at a fairly brisk pace, depending on weather. Nothing too serious…who knows, we may even make snow angels!

As usual, bring a few $$ with you in case we slip into some local establishment for a hot drink (funny how that happens!)

Non-members: Please bring a signed non-cycling waiver (FREE!)
Start time: 6:00pm
Location: Cobourg, parking lot behind the Dutch Oven
Hike leaders: Anita and Randy

More Ski Times for the Rest of December

Even though it was a super cold day we stayed warm (thanks to layering and covering exposed skin) and had, yet again, a fun time! If conditions permit, there will be a night ski Saturday early evening on the trail from Hastings, but for the rest of the days this year the start time is at 1:00 from Beagle Club.

For more information regarding Saturday’s ski, check the comments on this post as there will not be a separate post for it. If we don’t do the night ski on that day, we’ll ski at 1:00 at Beagle Club instead. Maria Siemiaszko is the ski coordinator for all the dates.

This is a final opportunity to wear your Christmas lights! Bring a headlamp or flashlight. We ski by the moonlight but use the brighter lights to warn snowmobilers of our presence as this is a multiuse trail.
